Intel Sampling Nehalem-successor ''Sandy Bridge''

Intel reveals a little more about the next generation of processors after Nehalem.

Although the market is currently buying Intel's matured Nehalem-based chips since the beginning of this year (although Apple only finally caught up just yesterday) with the Core i3, i5 and i7 CPUs, the chipmaker has revealed when the next CPU successor, Sandy Bridge will hit.

Intel CEO Paul Otellini yesterday said at a developer forum in Beijing that it's shipping volume samples of Sandy Bridge to customers in Q1 2010 as an early step towards commercial production later this year. Actual chips will be hitting sometime in early 2011.

Initial Sandy Bridge chips will feature dual and quad core configurations before stepping into more complex chips with hexacore or octacore designs. The new chips will run on the LGA1155 Intel 6-Series platform codenamed Cougar Point.

One of the advancements in Sandy Bridge is the addition of Intel Advanced Vector Extension (AVX) instructions, which is designed to accelerate multimedia such as image, video, and audio processing, as well as engineering applications, including 3D modeling and analysis, scientific simulation, and financial analytics.

Sandy Bridge will also continue support for the Intel AES New Instructions (AES-NI), seven software instructions that accelerate data encryption and decryption. Sandy Bridge will also integrate Intel's sixth-generation graphics core and will include acceleration for floating point, video, and processor intensive software most often found in media applications.

Intel will be sticking with its 32nm process technology, which the company has been proud to say that it is the fastest ramp ever, for the first Sandy Bridge iterations.

"In our manufacturing environment our factory teams have executed the ramp of our 32nm process superbly. We exceeded output expectations with lower costs than originally anticipated and are currently shipping over fifty SKUs on 32nm process. 32nm is our fastest ramping process ever and I am pleased to note we are accelerating the ramp of our third and fourth 32nm factories faster than our original plan, such that by early Q4 we will have four factories in production on 32nm,"

Opet novi socket, samo me zanima dali če i dalje ostat 1156 i 1356 jer, jer ipak tri socketa su dosta za imat u isto vrijeme

Izgleda da 1156 otpada i dolazi 1155, procesori neče biti međusobno kompatibilni, i naravo 1366 če se zamijenit sa LGA 2011.

samo ono zbilja nisu normalni s tim, jer masu ekipe je sad kupilo nove konfe i nakon ove vijesti ispada da su kupili zastarjelu tehnologiju jer ovi su vec najavili novu zivjela tehnologija i napredak

Neznam samo zašto naslov nije: "Intel LGA 1156 i 1366 - platforme bez budućnosti", jer će oba dvije platforme biti zamijenjene novijima.

Po ovom što je navedeno nema neke bitnije razlike izmedju LGA 1156 i 1155, Intelu se naravno ipak više isplati kada korisnici osim procesora kupuju i matičnu ploču sa njihovim čipsetom.
Izgleda da je Intelov marketing u punoj snazi jer su gledajući kroz prošlost prvo barem mogli izbaciti 32nm procesore za LGA 1156 (mislim na quad-ove) i 1366 ali eto valjda su procjenili da im je promjena čipseta ipak profitabilnija.

Neznam samo zašto naslov nije: "Intel LGA 1156 i 1366 - platforme bez budućnosti", jer će oba dvije platforme biti zamijenjene novijima.

Mozda zato sta je LGA 1366 platforma predstavljena jos tamo krajem 2008. godine, a do izlaska nove platforme i nekog ozbiljnijeg stancanja novih procesora za tu platformu, LGA 1366 ce vjerojatno napuniti 3-4 godine kvalitetnog radnog staza.

Drugo, pobrkao si promjene sa novom platformom. Najveca promjena kod novih procesora, a ujedno i ogromna usteda kod troskova proizvodnje je upravo integracija chipseta/igp chipa/procesorskih jezgri u jednu monolitsku jezgru.

Ovaj standardni "chipset" na maticnoj je isti vrag ko southbridge chipovi na danasnjim plocama, samo sta ce ovaj podrzavat sata III
Al bit ce tu razloga i unapredenja zbog kojih ce se razmisljat o upgrejdu, zasigurno.

Core i7 performance at 70W All in One
The latest info we revealed about upcoming Sandy Bridge desktop platform promises to take the TDP significantly down, retaining identical performance in the process.

Intel divides the market to few segments and one of the important ones is lifestyle desktop platform. The best of this platform, which unites the small form factor cases and all-in-one PCs, is powered by Core i7 and 5 series of chipsets. Intel tells its partners that these systems can operate at 88W TDP.

The plan is to replace them with Sandy Bridge CPUs and 6 series chipsets in 1H of 2011. The best part is that this platform should have Core i7 performance if not even higher at 70W TDP. This is some 25 percent better, which sounds like a quite big leap.

Still we are missing quite a lot of details as we don’t know much about clocks or performance.

Kak to (pošto se već nekolko dana povlači po netu) da još niko nije postal prve dojmove o nadolazećim LGA-1155 Sandy Bridge procesorima.

Mislim da Intel malo pretjeruje s tim socketima. Svakih par godina neki novi tako da staru platformu možeš komotno baciti ili prodati u bescjenje. AMD po tom pitanju ima daleko bolju politiku.

Još sam negdje pročitao, a nisam niti znao za to, da s ovim čipsetom prestaje integracija PCI sabirnice, odnosno slotova.

Kaj ekipo, nema komentara na prethodni post? Dosta su interesantni rezultati, iako nije neko opširno testno područje obuhvaćeno. Koliko sam upućen, nomenklatura ovih procesora još nije poznata?

fino kaj su izbacili pci, samo nije fino kaj neće vjerojatno još bit usb3 integriran

Sandy bridge je razočarenje, nadam se da će amd izbacit bolji procesor. Ustvari prilično sam siguran da ću preć na 890FX ploču koja treba bit kompatibilna s buldozerom.


Da argumentiram, ja s E6600 dobijem 441 bod na cpu mark, i oko 11 i nešto sekundi na superpi1MB.

To kaj je inženjerski primjerak samo znači da s to te performanse po megahercu, vjerojatno će kasnije dignut takt no performanse po megahercu će bit iste.

Intel Deliberately Limiting Sandy Bridge Overclocking?

According to the crew at Bit-Tech, Intel’s Sandy Bridge is designed to deliberately limit overclocking. Here’s a quote from the news post:

A video leaked to HKEPC and posted on YouTube (see from 2mins onwards) confirms the fact that only a 2-3 per cent OC via Base Clock adjustments will be possible. This is because Intel has tied the speed of every bus (USB, SATA, PCI, PCI-E, CPU cores, Uncore, memory etc) to a single internal clock generator issuing the basic 100MHz Base Clock.
