Arrow AMD Ryzen "ZEN5" (9000 CPU series) Info thread

Citiraj:
Citiraj:
AMD is planning to launch both the Ryzen 9000 desktop and Ryzen AI 300 notebook processors this Summer. Some of the first notebooks powered by the Ryzen AI 300 series should be announced by notebook OEMs as early as this week; while the Ryzen 9000 series desktop processors will be available to customers from July 31, 2024. The new Zen 5 microarchitecture builds on AMD's proven CPU core technology, and doesn't try anything fancy like its generational counterpart from Intel, the Lion Cove P-core used on Arrow Lake. Zen 5 still brings a double-digit percentage IPC gain over the previous generation, and introduces several efficiency improvements over Zen 4 thanks not just to its newer 4 nm process, but also a host of other innovations. AMD was able to increase clock speeds, and lower TDP across the desktop processor lineup, and still achieve good performance gains.
Citiraj:
AMD has also worked on the physical characteristics of the processor's dies' cooling performance, which see a 15% reduction in thermal resistance, which results in an impressive 7°C reduction in temperature at the same TDP. We asked them to clarify this, and they confirm that no changes have been made to the IHS or the TIM. The improvements are due to better management of the "hot spot", and a different placement of the thermal sensor. Granite Ridge is a chiplet based processor, just like Raphael. AMD has largely carried over the 6 nm client I/O die (cIOD) from the previous generation, although the substrate has many changes owing to the different dimensions of the 4 nm Zen 5 CCDs, compared to the 5 nm Zen 4 CCDs.
Citiraj:
The Zen 5 and Zen 5c cores will be implemented across 4 nm and 3 nm foundry nodes. Both the Zen 5 CCDs on Granite Ridge, and the Strix Point monolithic processor are built on 4 nm, however AMD is working on high-density chipsets for 5th Gen EPYC that will see AMD implement 3 nm. Back when AMD Zen made landfall in 2017, nobody expected the company to remain competitive with Intel for more than a couple of generations, but the company has consistently proven everybody wrong. It has stuck to its roadmap, only promised what it could deliver, and delivered on those promises. We've been given consistent double-digit IPC gains for each new Zen generation, and every two generations, AMD has transitioned to a new class of process nodes. In a way, AMD and TSMC have been able to imitate Intel's tick-tock product development cycle far better than Intel itself.
Citiraj:
AMD Granite Ridge and Strix Point Zen 5 die-sizes and transistor counts confirmed
Citiraj:
To begin with, "Strix Point" is a monolithic silicon, which is confirmed to be built on the TSMC N4P foundry node (4 nm). This is a slight upgrade over the N4 node that the company built its previous generation "Phoenix" and "Hawk Point" processors on. The "Strix Point" silicon measures 232.5 mm˛ in area, which is significantly larger than the 178 mm˛ of "Hawk Point" and "Phoenix." The added die area comes from there being 12 CPU cores instead of 8, and 16 iGPU compute units instead of 12; and a larger NPU. There are many other factors, such as the larger 24 MB CPU L3 cache; and the sizes of the "Zen 5" and "Zen 5c" cores themselves.

The "Granite Ridge" desktop processor is a chiplet-based processor, much like the Ryzen 7000 "Raphael." AMD is confirmed to be reusing the 6 nm client I/O die (cIOD) from "Raphael." This chip measures 122 mm˛, and packs 3.4 billion transistors. For reference, the cIOD of Ryzen 5000 "Vermeer" and Ryzen 3000 "Matisse" is built on the Global Foundries 12 nm node, measures a similar 125 mm˛, but with a much lower transistor count of 2.09 billion. The key contributor to the transistor count increase is the tiny iGPU that the Socket AM5 cIOD comes with. It may have just 1 workgroup processor (2 CU), but comes with the same display engines and media engines as the iGPU on APUs.
And now, onto the CPU complex dies (CCDs), the key area of silicon innovation for AMD desktop processors. The 8-core "Zen 5" CCD is codenamed "Eldora," and is built on the 4 nm foundry node. The HardwareLuxx.de report says that this the same N4P node as "Strix Point," but we've heard several other credible sources claiming that it is the more advanced N4X node, which favors high frequencies. The "Zen 5" CCD has a transistor count of 8.315 billion, which is a significant increase over the 6.5 billion of "Durango," the 8-core CCD based on "Zen 4," powering "Raphael."

What's most interesting is that this staggering 28% increase in transistor counts from the "Zen 4" Durango CCD and "Zen 5" Eldora CCD comes at a die-area decrease of 0.5%. That's right, the "Zen 5" CCD measures 70.6 mm˛, whereas the "Zen 4" CCD is 71 mm˛. The "Zen 4" CCD is built on TSMC N5 (5 nm), which goes to show the tremendous leap in transistor densities achieved from the switch to N4P (or N4X). A maxed out Ryzen 9 9950X processor hence has a total transistor count of 20.03 billion, while the single-CCD Ryzen 7 9700X has a transistor count of 11.715 billion. AMD Ryzen 9000 series goes on sale from July 31, 2024.

AMD Ryzen 9 9950X flagship “Zen 5” 16-core CPU tested From 40W up to 230W, matches Core i9-14900KS at 160W in Cinebench
Citiraj:
AMD's Ryzen 9 9950X, the fastest Zen 5 Desktop CPU, has been tested in Cinebench & matches Intel's top 14900KS chip at just 160W. The latest benchmarks of the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X 16-Core "Zen 5" Desktop CPU have been published by Anandtech forum member, Igor_kavinski, who previously showcased the full performance scaling potential of the flagship in Blender at various TDPs. For the latest tests, Cinebench R23 was selected as the go-to benchmark and the results are quite amazing. Once again, Igor's results come from a source running an ES (Engineering Sample) version of the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X CPU which is rated at lower clock speeds but was manually tweaked (PBO+CO) & tested at various target PPTs.

AMD Ryzen 9 9950X "Zen 5" Desktop CPU manages to match the 7950X3D at 120W and is able to match the Core i9-14900KS with a 160W TDP. The result versus i9-14900KS is the standout given that the latter was tested at its extreme profile which can push over 300W of power, almost double that of the 160W PPT and this isn't even the retail chip. With a PPT of 200W, the 9950X sits 5% ahead and with a PPT of 230W, the Zen 5 chip sits 8% ahead (and its still going to be less power hungry than the i9). The multi-threaded performance of the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X CPU with its 16 Zen 5 cores is looking great and with the added efficiency and lower temps, it will turn out to be a leadership product for the high-performance desktop segment.

Interview with AMD's Mike Clark the 'Father of Zen' — says 3nm Zen 5 is coming fast
Citiraj:
We interviewed Mike Clark, AMD's Corporate Fellow Silicon Design Engineer, during the company's recent Tech Day, where it unveiled the Zen 5 microarchitecture that powers the company's Ryzen 9000 and Ryzen AI 300 processors. Clark, known as the 'Father of Zen' has worked on AMD's CPU architectures for 31 years. He was the lead architect of the first generation of Zen, which he unveiled at Hot Chips while the company was teetering on the edge of bankruptcy back in 2016.

Over the last seven years, AMD has unveiled five generations of Zen, each delivering double-digit increases in instructions per clock (IPC) improvement. Clark has led Zen's development through all five generations, with a sixth in the hopper, transforming AMD from a struggling chipmaker to a stock market darling that has now clawed back a significant amount of market share from Intel. Now AMD has nearly twice the market cap of its long-time foe Intel, and the architectures driven by Clark served as the fuel for the incredible turnaround.

AMD's Zen 5 architecture will span both the 4nm and 3nm process nodes, powering the next generation of AMD's entire CPU product stack that spans from desktop and mobile PCs to its EPYC processors for the data center. Designing one cohesive underlying architecture to address all those markets is an incredible engineering feat. AMD is launching the 4nm Zen 5 chips at the end of this month, but it hasn't yet announced the timeline for the 3nm variants. Clark expanded on the challenges of designing Zen 5 for both the 4nm and 3nm processes concurrently, saying the two versions are basically arriving "on top of each other."

AMD has used its compact Zen 'c' cores, smaller cores designed for background tasks much like Intel's E-cores, to reduce cost and boost performance in its laptop processors. However, unlike its competitor, AMD hasn't brought those cores to its desktop lineup yet. Zen 5c marks the second iteration of AMD's compact cores, but they are currently not planned for the Ryzen 9000 family. However, Clark said he thinks compact cores will come to future Ryzen desktop chips and also expanded on the techniques the company uses for its unique implementation.

Intel has famously abandoned injecting hardware acceleration support for high-performance AVX-512 instructions, but AMD's Zen 5 marks the debut of full AVX-512 acceleration for the Ryzen family. Unlike Intel, which has to reduce clock speeds when its processors run AVX-512 workloads, AMD says these powerful instructions will run at the same clock speeds as standard integer operations. Clark also expanded on how the company achieved that feat and said that its Zen 5c cores can also run full AVX-512.

AMD Ryzen 9 9900X early gaming tests leaked, slightly behind Ryzen 7 7800X3D, lower power & temperatures
Citiraj:
The benchmarks come from SaddyTech, an Italian YouTuber, who managed to acquire a retail AMD Ryzen 9 9900X CPU ahead of launch. The YouTuber tested the chip on an Gigabyte X670 AORUS Elite AX motherboard with the latest BIOS, a pair of DDR5-7200 memory (2400 fabric clock) and compared it in various games against the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. Coming to the performance figures, both the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X 12-Core "Zen 5" and AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D "Zen 4" CPUs were tested in various titles at 2160p, 1440p and 1080p resolutions. The first game on the list is Alan Wake 2 where the new Zen 5 chip was slightly faster in avg FPS but the Zen 4 3D V-Cache chip managed to surpass it in both average and lows.

In terms of power figures, the CPU consumed 111W and an average of 102W while gaming during COD/CS2 and peaked out at 66C temperatures which are quite amazing numbers. In Cyberpunk, the temps did reach up to 85C which is still lower than the 90C+ temps on the Ryzen 7000 CPU series and power hit a peak of 144W. The lower power and temperature claim made by AMD is right on the spot. With that said, the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X should end up being a strong overall multi-threaded chip if priced right. AMD's Ryzen 9000 "Zen 5" Desktop CPUs will be available later this month on the 31st of July so stay tuned for more information.

AMD Ryzen 9 9900X appears to be slower than the 7800X3D in a lot of games in these first third-party gaming benchmarks

Ja čekam rezultate 9950X-a.

AMD Delays Ryzen 9000: “Did Not Meet Quality Expectations”
Citiraj:
AMD has delayed the launch of its Ryzen 9000 CPUs ("Zen 5") to August 15th, with a possibility to ship slightly earlier, due to a non-specific inability to meet "quality expectations." The delay affects all four current models: The Ryzen 9 9950X, R9 9900X, R7 9700X, and R5 9600X are all delayed. Again, it is possible some models ship sooner. The current target is August 15th. We expect to get CPUs for reviews in time for this new release date. AMD provided GN with an official statement. We also provide some (mostly for fun) commentary on the current situation as it relates to Intel's huge CPU mess. Maybe AMD is trying to avoid looking like Intel.
Citiraj:
The company will now launch the Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X processors on August 8, while the higher-end Ryzen 9 9950X and Ryzen 9 9900X will be delayed until August 15. During final processor checks, AMD discovered an unspecified quality issue with the Ryzen 9000 processors that had slipped past its internal inspection processes. The issue doesn’t require a redesign or re-spin of the Ryzen 9000 silicon and will not result in changes to the already-defined specifications for the various models. AMD will re-screen the chips pulled from the field to identify any with potential issues and then return unaffected models to retail channels. This indicates that not all chips suffer from the issue.

Citiraj:
We identified an issue with our initial production testing for Ryzen 9000 series processors that could result in a small number of parts reaching market that do not meet our quality standards. As a result, we have updated our test flow to include additional screening. As a part of ensuring that we are delivering the highest quality products to consumers, we are requalifying all the Ryzen 9000 series CPUs previously shipped to our distribution partners.
Citiraj:
Some of the processors were way off in benchmarking and testing. AMD decided to investigate and found a problem in some processors with the IOD.
Apparently salvageable with a IOD swap. Also the 6 and 8 core parts are not affected but recalling as a precaution which is why the delay on these is only a week.

Last Minute Problems! AMD Delays Ryzen 9000 - What We've Learned
Citiraj:

Ryzen AI 0 HX 370 was overall about 10% faster than the Ryzen 7 7840HS and about 18% faster than the Ryzen 7 7840U... Not bad, considering those prior Zen 4 parts were all Zen 4 full fat cores compared to the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 having four Zen 5 cores and eight Zen 5C cores. The Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 also came in 43% faster than the current Intel competition with the Core Ultra 7 155H "Meteor Lake" processor.

Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 SoC was pulling about 20.4 Watts with a peak of 34.2 Watts.... Meanwhile the Ryzen 7 7840HS had an average of 35 Watts and a peak of 60 Watts. The Ryzen 7 7840U had a 27 Watt average and a peak of 51 Watts. The Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 came out faster than those parts while consuming significantly less power. This Zen 5 power efficiency is very exciting and should carry over for desktop and server parts too.
