Intel reports third-quarter 2024 financial results
Citiraj:
Intel reported a massive net loss on Thursday, weighed down by impairment and restructuring charges. Intel just reported Q3 2024 earnings, and losses are ten times worse than Q2 — a $16.6 billion loss, up from $1.6 billion. But Intel says that’s because of write-offs and restructuring to turn its fortunes around, including depreciating old manufacturing for its Intel 7 node. The company has largely missed out on a boom in investments in speedy, advanced AI chips for data centers as businesses double down on adopting generative AI technology - a market dominated by nVidia followed by rival AMD.

Intel reported a net loss attributable to Intel of $16.6 billion for the third quarter, compared with a net profit attributable to Intel of about $300 million in the year-ago period. Intel’s revenue declined 6% year over year in the quarter, which ended on Sept. 28, according to a statement.

The company registered a net loss of $16.99 billion, or $3.88 per share, compared with net earnings of $310 million, or 7 cents per share, in the same quarter a year ago. As part of its cost reduction plan, Intel recognized $2.8 billion in restructuring charges during the quarter. There were also $15.9 billion in impairment charges. Intel has been mired in an extended slump due to market share losses in its core businesses and an inability to crack artificial intelligence. CEO Pat Gelsinger revealed plans during the quarter to turn the company’s foundry business into an independent subsidiary, a move that would enable outside funding options.

Intel posted a $16.6 billion loss in the third quarter – the largest in the silicon veteran's history – as it booked more than $18 billion in restructuring and impairment related charges. Ever the optimist, Gelsinger couldn't help but put a positive spin on the ordeal. He declared that that Intel is well on its way to "completing what will be one of the most seminal restructurings in the history [of the company]. The steps that we took in our financial restructuring this quarter was very critical to be able to bring us to a point where we can say we have capacity to drive long-term shareholder return." Gelsinger tried to rally the troops: "Q3 was a good step. Now we need to finish the year strong and prepare for 2025."

nVidia to take Intel's spot on Dow Jones Industrial Average
Citiraj:
Intel will be replaced by nVidia on the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average index after a 25-year run, underscoring the shift in the chipmaking market and marking another setback for the struggling semiconductor firm. Once the dominant force in chipmaking, Intel has in recent years ceded its manufacturing edge to rival TSMC and missed out on the generative artificial intelligence boom after missteps including passing on an investment in ChatGPT-owner OpenAI. Intel's shares have declined 54% this year, making the company the worst performer on the index and leaving it with the lowest stock price on the price-weighted Dow. Intel's revenue was $54 billion in 2023, down nearly one-third from 2021, when Pat Gelsinger took over as CEO. The company is worth less than $100 billion for the first time in 30 years. That pales in comparison to nVidia, which is sitting at a $3.32 trillion valuation, making it the world's second-most valuable company.

Citiraj:
Intel might be too big to fail — Washington policymakers are already discussing potential solutions if the chipmaker cannot recover
Citiraj:
American lawmakers have quietly been discussing options on how they could help Intel get back on its feet should its financial situation deteriorate. It should be noted, though, that these are just precautionary discussions of backup plans in case the company folds. These discussions show how much Washington, D.C. values Intel, primarily as the U.S. competes with China for global dominance in advanced technologies. Although both AMD and nVidia, semiconductor giants in their rights, are also American companies, Intel is the only one that both designs and manufactures chips.

If Intel were to fail, the U.S. would have to rely on TSMC and Samsung to make its most advanced chips. Even though both of these companies already have fabs in the U.S., they only provide a fraction of their total output. Furthermore, although both companies have headquarters based in allied countries, South Korea and Taiwan are at risk because of their proximity to China. Another reason why the Capitol and the White House wouldn’t want to see Intel fail is because it’s one of America’s top exporters, with its export revenue in 2023 exceeding $40 billion. Aside from that, the company is also working with the Pentagon’s Secure Enclave program to build leading-edge chips for the military, making it crucial for the country’s economy and security. It’s also a major employer — even though it’s in the process of laying off over 16,000 people, it still has over 120,000 employees on its payroll.

However, sources say policymakers are shying away from lump sum bailout payments as the White House did for Chrysler and General Motors in 2008. Instead, one of the solutions they’re considering is a government-encouraged private-sector merger, potentially with other Intel rivals like AMD or Marvell. After all, there have already been some rumors that Arm and Qualcomm are allegedly interested in acquiring a part or all of Intel—but some experts say that breaking up Intel will not do anyone good. Whatever the case, let’s hope that Intel will not get into a position where it would require federal assistance to ensure its survival.

If everything goes according to plan, Intel should be able to pick itself up and compete again. Still, it wouldn’t hurt the American government to have a backup plan ready if something else goes wrong.

Postoji li ijedan segment u kojem postižu neki uspjeh? Da ih država ne održava na aparatima, davno bi se ugasili. Impresivno je vidjeti tvrtku kojoj ne ide apsolutno nigdje – čega god se uhvate, pretvore u neuspjeh.

Intel reportedly scaling back R&D teams in Israel — several hundred talented staff will be laid off
Citiraj:
Intel plans to reduce its workforce by several hundred employees at its Israeli research and development centers, following similar job cuts at its facilities elsewhere. This move is part of the company's general cost-cutting measures amid financial challenges, and it opens opportunities for competitors to attract Intel's talent. There is a catch, though, as dozens of Intel employees already left the company for nVidia earlier this year. Intel's Israeli operations employ around 11,700 people, including 7,800 in R&D roles and 3,900 in manufacturing, with the latest layoffs expected to focus on R&D while leaving manufacturing staff largely intact as Intel readies for the completion of Fab 38 in Kiryat Gat, the report says. The exact number of people that will either be proposed to leave voluntarily, or retire, or just laid off is not known, Intel is set to cut its Israeli workforce by several hundred positions.

Intel has three R&D sites in Israel. Each of these Israeli centers has a specialized focus: Haifa works on CPUs, AI hardware, and software; Petah Tikva develops communications and AI solutions; and Jerusalem is involved in communications, software, and cybersecurity. Intel's Israeli R&D team is responsible for multiple breakthrough microarchitectures, such as Banias, Yonah/Merom, and Nehalem, just to name a few. Each of these was strategically important for Intel at some point. In fact, the Banias processor was the heart of Intel's Centrino platform, the company's first platform developed specifically for laptops, which pretty much revolutionized the market. Yonah/Merom put Intel back on the map of high-performance PCs and replaced the power-hungry Netburst microarchitecture that powered Pentium 4 processors. But while Intel itself is slashing its R&D talent in Israel, it should be noted that people are leaving the company, too.

nVidia has been hiring former Intel employees: in 2024 alone, at least 30 Intel employees moved to nVidia's offices in Yokneam and Tel Aviv, with total hires from Intel estimated to range from 60 to 90. nVidia is expected to hire more Intel employees as the layoffs continue, possibly bringing the number to about 100. As of June 30, nVidia reported a workforce of 4,000 employees in Israel, reflecting the company’s growing presence in the region.
