Hello,

Since the 2.0.1 patch it appears that a large number of players have been receiving the Unable to Validate Game Version error message when logging in.

We have been investigating this and have so far identified 4 Trojan Horses which may cause this issue:

# W32.Virut.A
http://www.symantec.com/security_res...930-99&tabid=1
# Backdoor.Sdbot
http://www.symantec.com/security_res...051312-3628-99
# Generic2.DVJ

# Generic.XKS

We would strongly recommend that any players receiving this error message run a thorough virus scan of their computer with an up to date Anti Virus program. If you do not have Anti Virus software, there are several freely available here:

AVG - http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5
Avast - http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
Free AV - http://www.free-av.com/

You may also want to consider scanning your system for spyware and other threats, as some of these manifest as Trojans as well

Ad-Aware - http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad-...e_personal.php
Spybot: Search & Destroy - http://www.safer-networking.org/
Windows Defender - http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx

Note: That some Trojans may hide themselves or alter themselves to stay in the memory that a virus checker may sometimes not detect . In this situation it is also best to perform a full virus scan will in Windows Safe Mode as the Trojan will be unable to load itself into memory.

Details of how to boot into safe mode can be found here: http://faq.wow-europe.com/en/article.php?id=719

There are also a number of Work Around solutions to get you playing again until you are able to remove the virus:

Creating a New Windows User Account

Create a New Administrator account:
Go to Control Panel and then User Accounts
Make a new Administrator Account with a simple name such as "wow"
Once it is created, click on the icon for it in User Accounts and Choose to create a password, again choose something simple like 1 letter.

Now you can launch the game as follows:

Right click on your WoW icon.
Select "Run As..."
Select "The following user:"
Select your new account
Type in the password
Click Ok.

If you get an error message when doing this that says "The Directory is Invalid", you will need to log out from your current windows account and into the new account, and then use the Run As command as a above again, still choosing your new account.

Launching two copies of the game

If the above does not work for you, some players have reported that launching the game twice has resolved the problem.
Start the game as normal
when you reach the login screen, press Alt+Tab to return to Windows
Launch the game again and log in.

[Update 15-12-06]

If the above steps didn’t help to launch the game, please try to use the Repair tool in your game directory. To do so:

-Right click on your World of Warcraft shortcut on the Desktop and choose Properties
-Click on Find target on the Shortcut tab…
-Double Click on the file named Repair and choose “Reset and check files” option
Once it has finished, try to run the game again.
