Microsoft disabled USB AutoRun/AutoPlay for non-optical removable drives (like USB flash drives) in 2011, through a Windows update.

• Originally, Windows XP and Vista allowed AutoRun on all removable drives, meaning malware on USB sticks could automatically execute when plugged in.
• To mitigate widespread malware (like Conficker), Microsoft announced changes in 2009 and finalized them in February 2011, when a Windows Update (KB971029) disabled AutoRun for USB and other non-optical removable media on Windows XP, Vista, and 7.
• After that update, AutoRun remained functional only for CD/DVD media, not USB drives.
