Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan faces scrutiny over investments in Chinese military-related companies
Citiraj:
Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan has a stake in over 600 Chinese companies, including some with connections to China's military. This raises questions, especially given Intel’s links to U.S. defense contractors. Tan has made these investments through his venture capital firm, Walden International, and other entities like Sakarya Limited and Seine Limited. The companies Tan has invested in include big names in China’s tech and defense sectors, like Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC) and Dapu Technologies. Some of these companies are involved in surveillance and military technology, which raises national security concerns.

Tan’s portfolio, worth at least $200 million, includes investments in companies that work with the Chinese government and military. While his investments are legal as long as they don’t violate specific U.S. sanctions, some think his ties to these companies could conflict with Intel’s defense-related business. Although Intel has not directly commented on Tan’s investments, they’ve confirmed that he followed SEC rules by disclosing his holdings. Some people argue that Tan’s deep knowledge of China’s tech scene is valuable for Intel’s growth, but others worry about the potential risks.

Overall, while there’s no legal wrongdoing, Tan’s investments in Chinese companies connected to the military and surveillance tech raise questions about potential conflicts of interest for Intel. Many people are watching closely to see how these connections might impact Intel’s future, especially with its growing involvement in the U.S. defense sector.

Intel općenito stoji nikad bolje u povijesti firme, baš kao i aktualni američko-kineski političko-ekonomski odnosi, tako da ovaj razvoj situacije i nije previše problematičan za novog direktora.

TSMC Q1 profit surges 60%, beats forecasts
Citiraj:
The semiconductor giant reported a 60 percent jump in Q1 profits, to NTD$361.56 billion (USD$10.9 billion), and is sticking with its forecast for 2025 revenue growth. Chairman and CEO C.C. Wei says there’s been “no changes” in demand following Trump’s tariffs, with chips next in the president’s crosshairs. That doesn’t mean it’s ignoring the tariffs entirely though — they’re partly to thank for new efforts to accelerate the launch of its two upcoming US chip plants. TSMC says it has no intention of forming a JV with Intel, asserts that its production yields in the arizona Fab are comparable to those in Taiwan facilities. In what is nothing short of a bombshell commentary that again places Intel's future within the raging vortex of uncertainty, TSMC has declared during its earnings call that it is not interested in forming a JV with other companies.

TSMC is speeding up its plans to grow worldwide, the company's Chairman, C.C. Wei is announcing they'll start building their third and fourth fabs in Arizona later this year. This comes after TSMC finished constructing the second Arizona plant while the first fab started volume production in Q4 2024. TSMC wants to open its second factory about six months earlier than planned due to increasing customer demand. The first factory will make 4 nm chips, the second will target 3 nm chips, and the newer ones will work on even smaller N2 and A16 nodes. This rapid expansion is part of TSMC's additional $100 billion investment to build five more semiconductor plants and a research center in the U.S. In total, TSMC will invest $165 billion in the United States.
