GeForce RTX 4090: nVidia investigates reports of burning power cables

nVidia is currently investigating reports of two GeForce RTX 4090 (test) where the included 12VHPWR adapter cables have melted or burned out and the 12-pin connectors on the graphics cards have been damaged. However, the findings are not new, the first reports have been in circulation for a month. Even before the GeForce RTX 4090 was released, the Peripheral Component Interconnect Special Interest Group (PCI-SIG), the body behind the PCIe specifications, was concerned about the thermal variance in power supplies for the new graphics cards. As it turned out later, it was nVidia itself that reported the problem to the PCI-SIG.

After testing various implementations of the new 12VHPWR connector, the company concluded that severe bending and multiple mating starting at around 40 cycles can lead to thermal hotspots and in some cases even melting and burning out of the cables. CableMod , a manufacturer of power supply accessories , cables and adapters, also warns of this problem. In the meantime, however, the problem has also occurred "in the wild", which has prompted nVidia to conduct appropriate investigations, as the manufacturer has now confirmed. AMD also became aware of the problems and officially confirmed before the launch of RDNA 3 by Scott Herkelman as a leader in the Radeon division and Sasa Marinkovic from marketing that this solution will not be used for their cards.
