With ‘Mega-Fab’ coming, Intel’s Gelsinger promotes chip legislation
Citiraj:
As the U.S. semiconductor industry awaits enactment of a chip legislation that among other things would provide tax and other incentives to build domestic foundries, Intel Corp. is in the midst of negotiations to construct a U.S.-based “mega-fab” designed to revive American chip production. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said negotiations with local officials are ongoing, and the company expects to announce a U.S. site by the end of the year. Along with necessary foundry infrastructure, including inexpensive power and plentiful water, the chip maker also wants to locate its new fab near a university. The new fab, costing as much as $15 billion, would be “entirely transformational,” Gelsinger asserted, as the U.S. seeks to recapture a greater share of global chip-making capacity. Gelsinger said Intel is urging lawmakers, “Go fast! Let’s get this into law because I want to build factories a lot of faster than we can today.” Tax breaks and other incentives to rebuild western chip manufacturing address the offsets offered by China and others that have made building fabs in Asia economically attractive as western chip makers struggle to compete. Intel expects to regain its manufacturing leadership by 2025 when it introduces its 18A process node.

TSMC's 3nm factory structure construction complete
Citiraj:
TSMC has started installing 3nm process manufacturing equipment at its new Fab 18b. When it comes to their next-generation 3 nm process (N3), it will be a full node improvement over N5. TSMC says there will be a logic density gain of up to 70 percent, an up to 15-percent performance gain, and an up to 30-percent power reduction compared to its 5-nm process. According to ASML, N3 will use EUV over 20 layers. TSMC will use the FinFET transistor structure for their 3-nanometer chips designed for both mobile and high-performance computing applications. Risk production for their N3 node is scheduled for 2021, with volume production slated for the second half of 2022.

AMD vs. Intel Server Unit Market Share Q1 2021: AMD bases its server share projections on IDC's forecasts but only accounts for the single- and dual-socket market, which eliminates four-socket (and beyond) servers, networking infrastructure and Xeon D's (edge). As such, Mercury's numbers differ from the numbers cited by AMD, which predict a higher market share. Here is AMD's comment on the matter: "Mercury Research captures all x86 server-class processors in their server unit estimate, regardless of device (server, network or storage), whereas the estimated 1P [single-socket] and 2P [two-socket] TAM [Total Addressable Market] provided by IDC only includes traditional servers."
