What are your virtual memory settings? To find them, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Change. There are at least a couple of possibilities: (a) If the setting is "No paging file", you can change this to either "System managed size" or "Custom size". Most people on the various fora suggest changing to Custom and specifying a fixed amount (both maximum and minimum the same value) of 1.5 times amount of ram. I don't believe that XP is as bad about eating your system alive by constantly changing the sizes as earlier windows systems, so changing to System managed might not be all that bad. (b) If the setting is already for System managed virtual memory, you may need to defragment your HDD or put your virtual memory on a larger disk. (c) If the display shows that the specified maximum is in use, increase the maximum.
