40nm yield issues cause Nvidia and AMD delays

O ovom se radi:

Citiraj:
TSMC are unfortunately running into more problems with their 40nm process technology which is causing issues for AMD and Nvidia in regards to GPU production.

Both graphics cards giants are expected to face shipment delays of their most current orders from TSMC due to these issues with 40nm yields. TSMC chairman Morris Chang spoke to Heaven Media earlier today and reported that 40nm yields recently dropped to just over 40% at the beginning of October and that they are working as hard as they can to resolve these issues before the end of the year.

For those of you who don't know TSMC are a vital link in the production chain for both graphics card manufacturers and given the poor state of the current 40nm market with the release of the excellent HD5000 series from AMD it is tough for AIB partners to get the necessary samples to meet demand. With Nvidia's Fermi just around the corner this situation is only going to get worse especially in the run up to Christmas holiday season.

TSMC have been having issues for quite some time with this complex process and have actually improved their yield rates from 20 percent during the Q2 phase - unfortunately it is still not reaching the required levels to deliver the goods to both Nvidia and AMD.

These are delicate times and if the situation continues then many people will be unable to get their new HD5000 or upcoming Fermi graphics cards. We have a source close to this so we will keep you informed when and if the situation changes.
