Nvidia Game physics GPU software

Za malo više detalja The Inquirer

Swarm dude 21.03.2006. 20:20

Piše kako podržava seriju 6 i seriju 7.

dmd-0 21.03.2006. 20:23

na tom sam i mislio...oćel grafa moč gurat to i igre...

Swarm dude 21.03.2006. 20:26

Mojih 128 mb gddr-a mi ne ulijeva previše povjerenja :(

JC Denton 21.03.2006. 20:27

E sad.. koliko ce to srezat graficke performanse 6600 grafa... hm... ovisi koliko ce oslobadjanje CPU resursa pomoc pri povecanju performansi :) :D

A buduci da ja nisam prorok - vidjet cemo! :)

Swarm dude 21.03.2006. 20:29

JC Denton 21.03.2006. 23:19

Vidjet cemo... kad izadje, ako bude cemu... mozda si kupim novu grafu.. pa mozda zaigram i FEAR kako bog zapovijeda :D

Now, according to NVIDIA’s own information, the minimum requirement for Havok FX support is the GeForce 7600 GPUs and they recommend the 7900 series of cards. The 7900 GTX sells for around $500 or so, nearly double the rate that AGEIA has planned their PhysX card will sell for. Users that have 6-series cards will not be able to take advantage of the physics processing capabilities that the Havok FX engine will utilize and the slower 7-series cards won’t run them as fast.

GI: I think you guys have one of the best physics setups in gaming, and with things like Aegia and what Havok is doing with NVidia, how will you implement that in Half-Life?

Newell: There are a couple of different issues going on there. With our physics, the player can collide with objects. This is a good thing. The stuff that is being shown by NVidia right now, the latencies are too high. Their physics is essentially to make prettier pictures. It’s like you can have a bunch of different things bouncing around so long as they don’t actually touch anything that matters. If you don’t actually have to read the data out – if your AI system ever needed to know about whether or not one of those objects had collided with something else it would run slower by running on the GPU than having it run on the main CPU. So physics that matter is different than physics that makes pretty pictures.

Lets start out by saying that the Havok FX product is not an NVidia technology, it is made by Havok, a physics middleware company. Havok FX will run on any DX9 or greater card that has the horsepower to pull it off without hammering the frame rate of the game. It will even work on ATI cards, eventually, but nothing has been officially announced yet. The physics engine does not need a dedicated GPU, it can be shared with graphics. Again, on todays cards, this may not be the brightest idea in the world, but that will change as GPU power advances.

The 'hard' stuff isn't all that well suited to GPU style math. Neither side really needs to talk to the other in a meaningful way, hence the breakdown. Can you do one side on the other? Sure. Does it make sense? Not so much. I stand by my earlier conclusions that the Ageia way, basically a single chip that does both well, is better than the Havok FX route, at least for now. As it stands now though, Havok FX isn't going to set the world on fire, it is mainly a tool for devs to get their feet wet and experiment. In a year or two, when there are mature products from both the Havok and Ageia camps, well, then we can decide which is better.
