We've had this graphics card in our possession for a while now and really wanted to test it on our new dedicated graphics card test rig, a VIA KT400 based mainboard with DDR400 which is AGP8x compatible. Oh boy, we've had problems people ... it took us literally 3 weeks to figure out why this combination had so much issues and was doing random crashes, games lock up after a few seconds, benchmarks where a complete disaster as well ... crashes again, HD corruption, you name it we got it. We've tried driver revisions, chipset revisions and yet failed to get this board stable. Then we took it to other test systems, KT333 .. worked fine, all Pentium 4 platforms worked fine .. then we took 2 different Radeon 9700 Pro's from another brand into our new test-rig .. the KT400 and hey .. not one Radeon 9700 Pro was willing to work properly on it. After contacting Gigabyte, Hercules, Albatron and ATI themselves we stumbled into something I had actually written about myself a while ago in our news section. The VIA KT400 may have problems with early revision of the Radeon 9700 Pro .. and that it did. Next to me are 3 difference Radeon 9700 pro graphics cards, total value about 1500 Euro .. they are all based on revision 1.0 and 1.1 and yes ... they all do not work on our new kick'ass KT400 based test platform.
I got assurance that the newer revisions of the Radeon 9700 pro work on KT400, in fact I have a revision 3 Radeon 9700 pro inbound. But ehm, remember this little tail when you are about to buy a new system and are considering a Radeon 9700 pro okay ? Before buying look at the board/PCB, there's a number on it stating the revision. Make sure it's at least revision 3.0 !
