With both Ubuntu 25.04 and Fedora 42 releasing this month you may be curious how these two Linux distributions are competing for performance. Well, it's a very tight race for common Intel/AMD x86_64 hardware. In this article are some benchmarks looking at clean installs of Ubuntu 25.04 and Fedora Workstation 42 on AMD Strix Point.

Ahead of the Linux 6.15-rc2 release on Sunday, there's now a big batch of DRM fixes merged to kernel codebase. On the AMDGPU driver side a notable change this week isn't a "fix" so much as squeezing in a feature. AMDGPU has landed its cgroups implementation around simple managing of discrete video memory (VRAM). In Linux 6.14 the infrastructure was added for device memory "DMEM" cgroup support to allow limiting GPU vRAM and similar uses. Squeezing in post-6.15 merge window is the bit of integration needed for exposing the DMEM cgroups support for the AMDGPU driver with discrete AMD graphics/accelerators.

Merged today was this week's batch of x86 fixes ahead of the Linux 6.15-rc2 release on Sunday. Notable with these x86 fixes are landing several patches to fix and clean-up the Spectre Return Stack Buffer "RSB" mitigation handling as well as introducing a new document to clarify the overall state and current mitigations.

Fedora has proposed a major change for its upcoming version 43 release that aims to achieve 99% package reproducibility, addressing growing concerns about supply-chain security. According to the change proposal announced March 31, Fedora has already reached 90% reproducibility through infrastructure changes including "clamping" file modification times and implementing a Rust-based "add-determinism" tool that standardizes metadata. The remaining 10% will require individual package maintainer involvement, treating reproducibility failures as bugs.

The effort will use a public instance of rebuilderd to independently verify that binary packages can be reproduced from source code. Unlike Debian's bit-by-bit reproducibility definition, Fedora allows differences in package signatures and some metadata while requiring identical payloads. The initiative follows similar efforts by Debian and openSUSE, and comes amid heightened focus on supply-chain security after the recent XZ backdoor incident.

APT 3.0 is powered by Solver3, a new, more efficient package dependency resolver that significantly improves how package installations and upgrades are handled. As a backtracking algorithm, it allows for more efficient dependency resolution and better handling of complex package conflicts.

The total amount donated to Linux Mint over the past five years (2020–2024) can be estimated based on available data:
  1. 2019–2022: According to donation charts, Linux Mint received approximately $300,000 annually during this period, totaling around $1.2 million for these four years3.
  2. 2023–2024: While specific annual totals for these years are not available, monthly donations ranged from $10,000 to $31,720 in peak months (e.g., December 2022). Assuming an average of $15,000 per month, donations for these two years would approximate $360,000 annually, totaling about $720,000.
  3. 2025 (up to April): Monthly donations have continued steadily, with February 2025 seeing $31,720 raised. Assuming similar monthly averages as prior years, donations for the first four months of 2025 likely exceed $120,000.
Estimated Total

Combining these figures, the total donations to Linux Mint over the past five years are approximately $2 million.

Uciteljima je fora drzat Ipad u rukama i "prezentirat" sadrzaj preko Apple TV iako imaju i digitalne ploce i sva ostala moderna pomagala.

The Fedora team has announced the release of Fedora 42. The new version elevates the KDE Plasma spin to "edition" status, alongside the existing GNOME edition, and introduces a new COSMIC desktop spin. "We've promoted our KDE Plasma desktop offering to 'Edition' status. The Fedora KDE team has been hard at work making sure bugs get fixed and everything is polished just so. We're confident that this can stand along our other amazing flagship offerings. I know the naming is a bit confusing, with GNOME-powered 'Workstation' using a generic label while KDE Plasma has the tech right in the name. We'll get that figured out eventually. If you don't know where to start, don't panic. Pick one and see how it goes." Additional information is available in the release announcement and in the release notes. The project also acknowledges a cosmetic bug: "We discovered a problem with the live boot media at the last minute, and since the release was already out of the airlock, we can't do much about it. It doesn't damage anything, but is annoying: just booting the Live media adds an unexpected entry to the UEFI boot loader even when Fedora Linux 42 is not installed to the local system." I’m not entirely sure how to link to this properly, but what we have here is a simple, to-the-point text file describing some of the benefits of Slackware, the oldest still maintained Linux distribution. It’s still run by Patrick Volkerding, and focuses on conservative choices and simplicity over ease. I doubt I have to explain the benefits of Slackware to the average OSNews reader, but this simple little text file does serve as a great marketing tool.
