Arrow Lake Retested with Latest 24H2 Updates and New BIOS
Citiraj:
In today's article we benched five configurations: 23H2 from October, 23H2 with the newest updates till today, and also added the newest ASUS BIOS into the mix, which includes the 0x113 microcode (not 0x114 yet). Then, we moved on to test Windows 11 24H2—first with a fresh installation that had no chance to update, so it lacks the KB5044384 package that includes Intel's fixes to the processor's power management profile. Finally, we updated Windows 11 24H2 with the newest everything, including KB5044384 and all other patches released this month. Just to clarify, in addition to "23H2 with new BIOS", all Windows 11 24H2 tests were done with the 1101 BIOS, too, which includes microcode 0x113. Our application results confirm that Intel has definitely improved things with their PPM update. Especially when comparing 24H2 only, the differences are noteworthy and bring much-needed performance improvements. However, compared to Windows 11 23H2, we see no meaningful advancements overall.

However, the whole claim is "6-30% (estimated)", which would suggest you'll see at least 6% in a majority of workloads—this is definitely NOT the case. Overall, the 285K cannot gain enough performance to make it a clear winner vs AMD's Ryzen 9000 lineup, or even 14900K Raptor Lake (it improves power consumption considerably though). Looking at the big picture, the 285K flagship remains slower than even the previous generation mid-range chip, the Core i5-14600K. It seems that Intel did not "fix Arrow Lake," but they "fixed Arrow Lake on 24H2". No doubt, fixing your product's performance in the newest OS release specifically is important and a solid improvement—why isn't the company transparent and makes that clear in their messaging?

Intel Core Ultra 9 285K "Arrow Lake" Windows 11 vs. Ubuntu Linux Performance
Citiraj:
From the benchmarks today it's looking like the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K CPU performance is fairly stable from Linux 6.11 through 6.13 kernels with no major performance shifts besides some subtle variation. Across the span of 92 benchmarks carried out, Ubuntu 24.10 was about 6% faster than Windows 11 24H2 for this out-of-the-box / default comparison. All the benchmarks in full can be found here. There was little benefit to the performance itself from switching out the Linux 6.11 default kernel on Ubuntu 24.10 to using Linux 6.12 LTS stable or Linux 6.13 Git, but the newer kernels can provide some features and hardware support such as if you'll also be going for Intel Arc B-Series graphics, for example. It was surprising to see the Intel P-State performance governor providing little help for the Core Ultra 9 285K compared to the default powersave governor. Typically the performance governor allows for more headroom but wasn't the case here with the Core Ultra 9 285K and ASUS motherboard.

Intel Arrow Lake 0x114 Microcode Already Out, No Significant Gains—We Tested
Citiraj:
Motherboard vendor ASUS began rolling out UEFI firmware (BIOS) updates to its Intel Z890 motherboards that contain Intel's 0x114 Microcode update for Core Ultra "Arrow Lake-S" desktop processors. The new microcode was touted as bringing in performance gains to gaming workloads across the board, with Intel saying that depending on the configuration, one could expect a "roughly 3-8% performance gain." The company said that motherboard vendors should begin releasing BIOS updates with 0x114 "starting January 2025," however, it seems like ASUS is ready with public "stable" (non-beta) BIOS updates with it. We use a ROG Maximus Z890 Hero in our "Arrow Lake-S" reviews, and so promptly grabbed the version 1203 BIOS from the ASUS website, and put it to the test. This also updates Intel ME (management engine) to v19.0.0.1827.

We added our performance testing numbers to our article from yesterday (December 19, 2024), where we had tested the Core Ultra 9 285K with the latest OS-level patches for Windows 11 24H2. Long story short, we do not notice any notable performance gains with the 0x114 microcode update. 0x114 was touted as providing users with additional performance gains after all the OS- and BIOS configuration related issues had been fixed. In its pre-brief from earlier this week, Intel said that the 0x114 microcode update represented additional performance gain opportunities that the company had discovered in the process of identifying and fixing the reasons why the processors fell significantly behind Intel's performance guidance in their launch reviews in October.

100+ Linux Benchmarks Of Intel Arrow Lake With New BIOS / 0x114 CPU Microcode
Citiraj:
There were no major changes in performance with the new ASUS BIOS featuring the 0x114 CPU microcode. A number of Phoronix readers inquired though the past few days if these Intel updates would further enhance Arrow Lake performance on Linux, but at this stage it appears not to across the 100+ benchmarks used. We'll see if the second round of updates in January mean anything for the Core Ultra Series 2 Linux performance. With the geo mean of over 100 benchmarks, the results were flat. Those wanting to jump through all of the unchanged Linux benchmark data can find this fresh data via this result file.

Vendors push Intel's promised performance-boosting firmware for Intel Arrow Lake CPUs
Citiraj:
Intel partners have started to deploy BIOS patches for Z890 motherboards featuring the 0x114 microcode coupled with the updated CSME 1854v2.2 firmware. The patches serve as the last piece to Intel's Core Ultra 200S (Arrow Lake) performance puzzle, with the newer CSME and BIOS combo promising additional single-digit increases in gaming performance.

In a report issued a few days back, Intel reportedly addressed four of the five root causes that held back performance. As a follow-up, Intel promised further performance enhancements through BIOS firmware updates by January, alluding to the long-anticipated 0x114 microcode. While that specific microcode has been in vogue for some time in the form of beta BIOS releases, Intel says that the final update requires both the updated microcode and a specific CSME Firmware Kit (19.0.0.1854v2.2 or newer), which is now available.

While Intel has addressed most of its underlying issues with Arrow Lake through Windows 11 updates, driver patches, and newer BIOSes, the final update should yield users a small additional bump in performance. We might see stable BIOS builds with the new 0x114 microcode and updated ME firmware from board partners by early January or even in a couple of days as they iron out the remaining quirks.

Intel’s newest “0x114” microcode reportedly fails to resolve “Arrow Lake-S” CPU issues, now bringing in up to 18% performance drop
Citiraj:
Intel's newest "0x114" microcode apparently is unable to resolve the troublesome performance issues with Arrow Lake processors, as new benchmarks show further degradation. According to benchmarks by CapFrameX, Intel's 0x114 microcode has failed to address Arrow Lake-S issues, as testing reveals yet again a massive drop in gaming performance. While running Intel's Core Ultra 9 285K on Cyberpunk 2077, the average FPS saw around an 18% decline, which is a significant drop, especially when you stack up the original drop in performance numbers. Despite Team Blue assuring customers of a "double-digit" performance gain with the new BIOS update, it seems like the initial tests convey a completely different picture.

Memory latency is also said to have increased, and in the benchmarks, it rose by around 14%, which is indeed disappointing. It is important to note here that this particular testing is one of the more "reputable" ones on the newest 0x114 microcode. In order to justify the fact that the new ARL-S BIOS update is flawed, we would need to see further evidence, but for now, it is likely not wrong to say that Intel needs to rework its approach towards the desktop CPU segment. Team Blue is also planning to hold a media briefing around CES 2025 to discuss the Core Ultra 200S performance issues, so that's most likely the next event we are looking at in terms of the fate of Intel's Arrow Lake-S series.

EDIT:

Intel Core Ultra 200S “Arrow Lake” CPUs receive microcode BIOS update this month, claims an average of 17.5% uplift in gaming
Citiraj:
Intel's Core Ultra 200S "Arrow Lake" Jan BIOS update offers up to 26% performance uplift in gaming and up to 97% in synthetic apps. Once again, Intel is claiming that their 'new' BIOS patch will fix the gaming performance of the Arrow Lake processors, particularly the Core Ultra 200S desktop ones. There have been several updates and announcements in recent weeks about this, but there were little to no improvements in gaming, even with the microcode 0x114. Intel has been consistently trying to fix the gaming performance by sending various BIOS upgrades to its board partners but has mostly failed. However, in the latest presentation, Intel claims that the upcoming BIOS patch could improve gaming performance by around 17.5% on average. This is according to the data provided by Intel, so take this with a grain of salt.
As you can see in the slide, Intel tested one of its Arrow Lake processors (model not disclosed) with the newest patch and saw up to 26% performance gains in Cyberpunk 2077, up to 7% in Assassin's Creed Mirage, up to 21% in DOTA 2, and up to 16% in Far Cry 6. These are the only four games it tested but didn't disclose the configuration or the settings it used in these tests. Intel claims that the synthetic performance also improves with this patch, resulting in about 52% enhancement in single-thread Cinebench 2024, up to a whopping 97% uplift in 3DMark Time Spy Overall, up to 10% in 3DMark Time Spy CPU, and up to 30% reduction in latency as found in AIDA64 Memory latency. 52% uplifts in single-threaded tests seem too good to be true because this is much higher even compared to generational uplifts. The current single-core score of Core Ultra 9 285K in the Cinebench 2024 test is 140–145 points, but a 52% uplift would mean 212–220 points, which is highly unlikely and misleading as well.

EDIT:
Citiraj:
Intel's Arrow Lake fix doesn't 'fix' overall gaming performance or match the company's bad marketing claims
Citiraj:
Our testing shows that Intel’s fix for its Arrow Lake chips isn’t effective in addressing the chips’ lackluster gaming performance, at least on the motherboards we tested with. And we found that the Core Ultra 9 285K’s updated gaming performance with one motherboard is now slightly slower than before. Additionally, the required operating system update has improved gaming performance for the prior-gen Raptor Lake Refresh even more than the Arrow Lake chips, so the flagship Core Ultra 9 285K falls even further behind its predecessor. As you'll see in our benchmarks below, the Core Ultra 9 285K still does not meet Intel’s initial gaming performance marketing claims and will not make our list of the best CPUs for gaming.

The Intel ‘Arrow Lake’ Core Ultra 200S launch was marred with lower gaming performance than the company promised, failing to match the prior-gen Core i9-14900K flagship in gaming despite the company’s already-uninspiring claims of parity. Intel pointed to numerous issues as the source of the low gaming performance and issued fixes via both Windows and BIOS patches.

At CES 2025, Intel issued its own benchmarks with claims of up to 25% more gaming performance with the 'fix,' a claim we’ve unfortunately seen parroted by the press. But those gains only apply to certain very specific issues that not all reviewers and users will have encountered. As we'll cover in-depth below, there’s a copious amount of wiggle room in Intel’s dubious claims of performance gains, but our tests show the patches don’t have a tangible impact on the competitive positioning against AMD, and even worse, Arrow Lake now fares worse in gaming against its predecessor.

At the end of the day, Intel’s fixes for its various failings did not demonstrably ‘fix’ the Core Ultra 9 285K’s gaming performance in any meaningful way, and they certainly aren't enough to meet the company’s original marketing claims or change the competitive positioning of its lackluster Arrow Lake chips. In fact, it looks like Arrow Lake is moving backward. Despite its other positive attributes, the Core Ultra 285K simply isn’t the best option for gaming.
