Intel buys Tower Semiconductor to expand fab business
Citiraj:
Intel has confirmed its plans to spend $5.4bn to acquire Israeli chip firm Tower Semiconductor as part of its scheme to expand and diversify its chip manufacturing business. The US chipmaker announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Tower Semiconductor, which specialises in manufacturing high-value analogue semiconductor components for more than 300 customers worldwide. The firm serves markets such as automotive, medical, industrial, consumer, and aerospace and defence. The transaction is expected to close in approximately a year. It has been unanimously approved by the boards of directors of both Intel and Tower, the two firms stated. Intel said the deal is a "highly complementary transaction" that brings together its own expertise in scale manufacturing with Tower Semiconductor's specialty technologies. Under the terms of the deal, Intel will acquire Tower for $53 per share in cash, which values the company at approximately $5.4bn. Intel also said that the acquisition will speed up the company's path to becoming a major provider of foundry services and capacity globally, adding that Tower Semiconductor would allow it to offer one of the industry's broadest portfolios of differentiated technology. The chip giant hinted the move would allow Intel to address the booming demand for semiconductors that has been seen as economies start to recover from the pandemic.

Intel wants 700-Series Chipset Motherboards without DDR4
Citiraj:
Although Intel's upcoming 13th generation of desktop CPUs that goes under the code name of Raptor Lake, are expected to retain support for DDR4 memory, it has come to our attention that Intel will make a big push towards DDR5 when the platform launches later this year. Intel is apparently already asking motherboard makers to avoid using DDR4 in combination with the upcoming 700-series chipsets and the only reason for this would be to speed up the transition to DDR5. According to various leaks and rumors we should expect to see support for DDR5 at 5600 MHz for Raptor Lake, which is at least a step in the right direction.

What this doesn't mean, is that Intel has removed support for DDR4 in the CPUs, as it's still very much present and is expected to work fine in 600-series chipset motherboards. As such, there shouldn't be any issues upgrading to a new CPU, at least not after a quick UEFI update. From our understanding, it's partially related to the fact that DDR4 and DDR5 motherboards have quite different UEFI code when it comes to the memory support and in turn it means that the board makers are going to end up spending a lot more time getting their boards working, as is already the case with the 600-series chipsets. We can sort of understand Intel's sentiment here, but we're also expecting to see some motherboards based on the 700-series chipsets with DDR4 support, least not from the likes of ASRock that has always liked to create non-conforming motherboards. However, this also looks like it's the end for DDR4 support from Intel, which wasn't entirely unexpected.

Lijepo je vidjeti da Intel u 12. generaciji podrzava ddr4 i 5 te da ce za laksu tranziciju to podrzavati i u 13. generaciji.

Intel granted patent for what is (allegedly believed to be) AMD's Zen architecture
Citiraj:
An Intel CPU micro-architecture patent was seemingly granted recently and the design of it is eerily similar to AMD's Zen layout, the one that AMD presented in the Hot Chips 28 event back in 2016, right before it was finally launched. The patent filed under the ID "US 11,294,809 B2", was discovered and the similarity was soon spotted. Intel Ocean Cove core architecture layout, both low-level and high-level, is an exact copy of AMD's original Zen core architecture. Even from the most basic Execution, Fetch and Decode layers to the topmost core hierarchy and chiplet design, everything is a blatant copy of the first Zen architecture which was fabricated on a 14nm process node. Although the patent doesn't clearly state so, the leaker believes it is that of Intel's Ocean Cove architecture, a CPU design that Intel started hiring for back in 2018, and is meant to succeed the current Golden Cove design found in 12th gen Alder Lake CPUs.

This $3 billion investment goes into a site that contains the largest concentration of facilities and talent in the world, Intel says. D1X is Intel's largest R&D site and home to nearly 22,000 employees across four campuses in Hillsboro, which is located 20 miles west of Portland. This expansion brings Intel's total investment in Oregon to more than $52 billion to date.
Citiraj:
It also follows huge spending commitments in other campuses, such as the $20 billion mega-site in Ohio and $88 billion in expansion plans in Europe.

Intel CEO visits Taiwan for additional capacity support from TSMC
Citiraj:
Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has made a short visit to Taiwan and met with TSMC in an effort to secure not only sub-7nm process manufacturing capacity but also additional 28nm and other mature-node process capacities to relieve its extremely-tight supply. Intel's announcements of European expansion plans come hard on the heels of news in January that the company plans to invest $20 billion in two new chip manufacturing plants in Ohio. Those US expansions are partially backed by the CHIPS for America Act, which passed as part of defense spending for the country's fiscal 2021. The European Union followed suit shortly thereafter, with the European Commission announcing last month that a European Chips Act would make €15 billion available until 2030 for semiconductor industry expansion.

Intel Sapphire Rapids 56-Core ES processor boosts to 3.3GHz at 420 Watts
Citiraj:
Intel is slowly transitioning its data center customers to a new processor generation called Sapphire Rapids. Today, thanks to the hardware leaker Yuuki_ans we have more profound insights into the top-end 56-core Sapphire Rapids processor and its power settings. According to the leak, we have information on either Xeon Platinum 8476 or Platinum 8480 designs that are equipped with 56 cores and 112 threads. This model was running at the base frequency of 1.9 GHz and a boost frequency of 3.3 GHz. Single-core can boost to 3.7 GHz if the report is giving a correct reading. Remember that this is only an engineering sample, so the final target speeds could differ. It carries 112 MB of L2 and 105 MB of L3 cache, and this sample was running with 1 TB of DDR5 memory with CL40-39-38-76 timings. Perhaps the most exciting finding is the power configuration of this SKU. Intel has enabled this CPU to consume 350 Watts in PL1 rating, with up to 420 Watts in PL2 performance mode. The enforced BIOS power limit rating is set at an astonishing 764 Watts, which could happen with AVX-512 enabled. Final TDP ratings are yet to be disclosed; however, these Sapphire Rapids processors are shaping to be relatively power-hungry chips.

Meanwhile Meteor Lake is also the first client part that will be built on the Intel 4 process, which was formerly known as Intel’s 7nm process. Intel 4 will mark Intel’s long-awaited (and delayed) transition to using EUV in patterning, making it one of the most significant changes to Intel’s fab technology since the company added FinFETs a decade ago. Meteor Lake, which is slated to be the basis of Intel’s 14th generation Core processors in 2023, is an important chip for the company on several levels. In terms of design, it is the first chiplet-based (or as Intel likes to put it, “disaggregated”) mass-market client SoC from the company. Intel’s roadmap for the Core lineup has the company using chiplet-style SoCs on a permanent basis going forward, so Meteor Lake is very important for Intel’s design and architecture teams as it’s going to be their first crack at client chiplets – and proof as to whether they can successfully pull it off.

EDIT:
Citiraj:
Intel LGA-1851 to succeed LGA-1700, probably retain cooler compatibility
Citiraj:
Intel's next-generation desktop processor socket will be the LGA1851. Leaked documents point to the next-generation socket being of identical dimensions to the current LGA1700, despite the higher pin-count, which could indicate cooler compatibility between the two sockets, much in the same way as the LGA1200 retained cooler-compatibility with prior Intel sockets tracing all the way back to the LGA1156. The current LGA1700 will service only two generations of Intel Core, the 12th Generation "Alder Lake," and the next-gen "Raptor Lake" due for later this year. "Raptor Lake" will be Intel's last desktop processor built on a monolithic silicon, as the company transitions to multi-chip modules.
Intel Socket LGA1851 will debut with the 14th Gen Core "Meteor Lake" processors due for late-2023 or 2024; and will hold out until the 15th Gen "Arrow Lake." Since "Meteor Lake" is a 3D-stacked MCM with a base tile stacked below logic tiles; the company is making adjustments to the IHS thickness to end up with an identical package thickness to the LGA1700, which would be key to cooler-compatibility, besides the socket's physical dimensions. Intel probably added pin-count to the LGA1851 by eating into the "courtyard" (the central gap in the land-grid), because the company states that the pin-pitch hasn't changed from LGA1700.

Early Intel 13th Gen Raptor Lake i9-13900 review suggests AMD Ryzen 7000 could be king
Citiraj:
With heavily vectorised SIMD workloads – RPL cannot beat ADL by more than 4-6% and thus generally even lose to the AVX512-enabled RKL with just 16-threads (vs. 32T on RPL). This shows just how much AVX512 can help despite the extra power required – and here it is hugely missed. However, AMD’s Zen3 (5900X) with less threads (24T) but 12 big cores (vs. 8C + 16c) still beats RPL by a decent margin and this is not great news for Intel. With AMD’s forthcoming Zen4 supporting AVX512, RPL is likely to be severely beaten into dust – by perhaps as much as 2x (100%). Intel will, again, have to rely on non-SIMD workloads/benchmarks (Cinebench?) to show performance leadership.
  • 10nm+++ (Intel 7+) improved process
  • Unified 36MB L3 cache (vs. 30MB on ADL thus 20% larger)
  • Up to 8C/16T “Raptor Cove” (!) cores – improved from “Golden Cove” in ADL
  • DDR5/LP-DDR5 memory controller support (e.g. 4x 32-bit channels) – up to 5600Mt/s (official, vs. 4800Mt/s ADL)
  • L2 increased to 2MB per core (almost 2x ADL) like server parts (ADL-EX)
  • Up to 16c/16T “Gracemont” cores – thus 2x more than ADL but same core
  • L2 4MB shared by 4 cores (2x larger than ADL)

Intel postpones groundbreaking ceremony, warns of delays at Ohio plant as CHIPS Act stalls
Citiraj:
Intel says it will delay the groundbreaking ceremony of its Ohio semiconductor factory and has warned of potential delays due to Congress dragging its feet over the CHIPS Act. The legislation will provide, among other things, $52 billion in funding for increasing domestic semiconductor production and research & development. In January, Intel announced plans to build a $20 billion chip manufacturing complex in New Albany, on the outskirts of Columbus, Ohio, as part of its IDM 2.0 strategy. The facility, predicted to directly employ 3,000 people, is supposed to begin construction later this year and be fully operational by 2025. Intel said that spending on the Ohio site could reach $100 billion over the next ten years, but the company has warned that the "scope and pace" of this expansion is dependent on the CHIPS Act. While a version of the standalone bill was passed last year, the funding still isn't signed into law as House and Senate negotiators continue to work on resolving disputes.

"Unfortunately, CHIPS Act funding has moved more slowly than we expected and we still don't know when it will get done," said Intel spokesman Will Moss, who called on Congress to act so Intel "can move forward at the speed and scale we have long envisioned for Ohio" and other US projects. The groundbreaking ceremony for the Ohio factory had been scheduled for next month but will now be postponed due partly to the "uncertainty" around the bill. Moss said that Intel is still committed to the $20 billion investment and remains excited to begin construction on the site. GlobalFoundries, which is expanding a manufacturing site in Malta, New York, gave a similar warning about the CHIPS Act delay slowing its plans. "The CHIPS Act makes the US semiconductor industry more competitive globally. For GlobalFoundries, the passing of CHIPS funding would affect the rate and pace at which we invest in expanding our U.S. manufacturing capacity," a spokesperson said. Intel is also building new chip fabs in Arizona; it has invested $7 billion in a new manufacturing center in Malaysia; there are plans to invest $3.5 billion in its New Mexico operations; and its $7 billion Fab 34 production facility in Ireland got its first equipment earlier this year. Additionally, the company is receiving 6.8 billion euros ($7.15 billion) in subsidies, around 40% of the total cost, to build a state-of-the-art campus in Germany (above).

In other Intel news, the firm has just demanded $625 million in interest from the EU after its $1.2 billion antitrust fine was overturned in January.

Intel 13th-Gen Raptor Lake specs, rumored release date, benchmarks and more
Citiraj:
Intel's 13th-Gen Raptor Lake processors will bring more cores, more connectivity, a revamped core architecture, support for PCIe 5.0 SSDs, and possibly even a rumored 6.0 GHz peak boost clock to bear. Alder Lake righted the ship. These chips brought the best of Intel's newly re-worked 10nm process, now re-named 'Intel 7,' enabling higher clock rates and lower power consumption, paving the way for Raptor Lake. Intel will etch the Raptor Lake processors on a refined version of that same process node and pair it with its newly-revamped x86 hybrid architecture, a design that combines a mix of larger high-performance cores paired with smaller high-efficiency cores. Like its predecessor, Raptor Lake will also support disruptive new features like PCIe 5.0 and DDR5 but preserves DDR4 support for less-expensive build options. Raptor Lake will also drop right into existing motherboards to offer an upgrade path for Alder Lake users, but there will be new 700-series motherboards at launch that offer better connectivity options. Intel is also introducing more CPU overclock features for Raptor Lake, too.

The Raptor Lake chips will have Performance Cores (P-Cores) with a new microarchitecture, rumored to be named Raptor Cove, designed to handle single- and lightly-threaded tasks, like gaming and productivity workloads. The Efficiency Cores (E-Cores) also bear signs of a revamped microarchitecture, but these cores are still rumored to have the Gracemont design. These cores step in for heavily-threaded workloads, background tasks, and multi-tasking. We know the flagship gets eight more E-Cores, but we aren't sure how Intel will increase the number of cores for the Raptor Lake Core i7 and i5 models — the former might see an increase to eight E-Cores, but we have no concrete indication of that yet.
Citiraj:
The Intel 4 node, previously known as the Intel 7nm technology node, is progressing nicely, says a report published today by Taiwan's DigiTimes. According to the report, which cited unnamed Intel sources, Intel 4 is on track for volume production in H2 2022. At the 2022 IEEE VLSI Symposium, Intel was highly optimistic about its next significant semiconductor production node shrink. It said that ported chips could run at >20% faster at the same power or reduce power usage by ~40% at the same frequency. In addition, we learned that the Intel 4 node, Intel's first to use EUV lithography, would also double transistor density (vs. Intel 7) for high-performance libraries. As well as benefiting from the new Intel 4 process technology, Meteor Lake will be the firm's first chiplet-style processor for the mass market – the so-called flexible tiled architecture and Foveros 3D packaging tech.

Intel's Meteor Lake Mobile Detailed: Up to 14 Cores, Xe-HPG GPU, Intel 4
Citiraj:
Intel's 14th Generation Core "Meteor Lake" processors will be the company's first client CPUs to feature a multi-tiled design, as well as the first product to be made using its Intel 4 fabrication process. But the company has never detailed what is under the hood of its Meteor Lake platform. Intel's Meteor Lake-U/P/H mobile processors will consist of four tiles — the compute tile (CPU cores) made using Intel 4 process technology (aka 7 nm EUV), the graphics tile produced by TSMC using its N3 node, the SoC tile and the I/O tile — on the same interposer interconnected between each other using the company's Foveros 3D technology.

The CPU tile is arguably the most intriguing feature, as it will contain up to six high-performance Redwood Cove P-cores as well as up to eight energy-efficient Crestmont general-purpose E-cores implemented using Intel 4, as seen on Meteor Lake's compute tile die shot. Meanwhile, a slide replicated by Igor's Lab indicates that the platform will also feature the so-called low-power energy-efficient cores. Mainstream Meteor Lake-U cores will feature up to 12 cores, whereas Meteor Lake-P and Meteor Lake-H will have up to 14 cores activated.

14th Generation Core "Meteor Lake" platform will split PCH into two separate chiplets: the system-on-chip (SoC) chiplet responsible for controlling the whole processor and actual I/O interfaces. The SoC tile is made using a low-power process technology to reduce power consumption of various controllers, though we do not know whether this chiplet is made in-house or by TSMC. Meteor Lake's SoC tile features a new memory controller that supports up to 64GB of LPDDR5X-7467 as well as up to 96GB of DDR5-5600.

Intel’s CEO rumored to visit TSMC next month as 14th Gen Meteor Lake allegedly pushed back to end of 2023
Citiraj:
Intel's CEO, Pat Gelsinger, might make a visit to Taiwan's TSMC to revise the plans for their 3nm production plans. The TSMC 3nm process node is expected to be utilized for the fabrication of the tiled-GPU that will be one of the four on-package chiplets for Meteor Lake. Internally, Intel has initiated "emergency correction" of its "platform blueprint' and "own process production capacity plan for the next 1 year. It is widely rumored that CEO Pat Gelsinger plans to visit Taiwan for the third time in August to meet with TSMC Chairman Mark Liu and CEO C.C. Wei to discuss these revised plans. Intel's 14th-gen Meteor Lake originally planned to enter mass production at the end of 2022 for launch in 1 H'2023, has been delayed to the end of 2023. Since Meteor Lake's GPU tile is outsourced to TSMC, this delay will disrupt TSMC's 3nm plans.

Intel Core i9-13900K up to 10% faster than i9-12900K in single-core
Citiraj:
The sample is a 24-core and 32-thread CPU with power limits set to 125W and 250W (MTB), confirming that this is indeed the K-series SKU. The processor was tested on ASUS ROG Z690 Extreme motherboard with DDR5 memory at 6400 MT/s. The system was also equipped with GeForce RTX 3060 Ti graphics, 1500W power supply and Thermalright AIO Frozen Magic 360 cooling solution. One must note, however, that Raptor Lake’s performance boost in mainly coming from higher clocks. There is also a question of how much thermal efficiency is required from the CPU cooler. The 13900K tested in Intel’s own XTU tool reached 100°C peak temperature and began to throttle despite using 360 AIO cooler. Furthermore, the PL4 (package) power reportedly hit as high as 420W.
