Intel breaks ground on two advanced chip FABs in Arizona

Intel started construction on two advanced chip plants in Arizona, which will help the company build more manufacturing capacity and a more resilient global supply chain. The move comes amid a race to expand chipmaking capabilities and is motivated by the company's ambition to retake the leadership position in process and packaging technology. Earlier today, Intel broke ground on two chip plants in Arizona that are expected to become fully operational in 2024. The two manufacturing facilities are dubbed Fab 52 and Fab 62 and will be built near four existing fabs at the company's Ocotillo campus in Chandler, Arizona.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger met with government officials for a ceremony to celebrate what he says is the largest private investment in Arizona's history. The $20 billion project will expand the company's manufacturing capacity and house state-of-the-art EUV production lines to produce the world's most advanced chips. Gelsinger believes this will help Intel reclaim its "unquestioned leadership in process and packaging technology" by 2025 and create thousands of new jobs. This includes 3,000 high-tech, high-paying jobs, 3,000 construction jobs, and 15,000 additional indirect jobs in the region.

The new chip plants are part of Intel's renewed IDM 2.0 strategy that will see the company's newly formed Intel Foundry Services (IFS) division take on contract manufacturing for other companies for the first time in company history.

When operational, the two new factories in Arizona will produce chips using Intel's 20A process, the first to use its "RibbonFET" version of Gate-All-Around (GAA) transistors and PowerVia interconnects. Gelsinger wouldn't say how much of the new capacity will be reserved for Intel Foundry Services customers, as it's too early to give an accurate estimate. However, he did say the two fabs will have a combined production capacity of "thousands" of wafers per week. And this is just the beginning. Intel already spilled the beans earlier this year on plans to spend anywhere between $60 to $120 billion to build a new mega-fab in the US to be more competitive with TSMC and Samsung. Intel will also allocate $95 billion to build two chip plants in Europe. The company is currently in talks with several officials to secure subsidies from the EU's Recovery and Resilience Fund.

Gelsinger says the company will announce the locations of the new sites in the coming months.

Zapravo je cool sto Intel uopće može kompetirati TSMCu i Samsungu pa makar bio i malo lošiji. Raznovrsnost tehonologije je dobra za napredak.

Fora je u tome da Intel ne može konkurirati TSMC-u i za taj dio priče je prošla baka s kolačima. Ne bi oni trebali TSMC za svoje nadolazeće CPU i GPU najave, da im mogu konkurirati.

Ovi su u TSMC-u jednostavno predaleko otišli, dok je Intel cijelo jedno desetljeće sjedil na rukama misleći da su glavna faca u kvartu. I sad su tu di jesu zajedno s još jednim direktorom.

Alder Lake (1 - 2) pak se iz dana u dan čini kao još jedan čušpajz u dobro poznatoj režiji marketinga.

TSMC ima najvise tvornica pa im tesko itko moze konkurirati, no intel prica vjv se bazira na konkurenciji za tek nadolazece procesore, ne za sav segment...

OK, kaj se nadolazećih procesora tiče, tamo negdje 2025., pa nadalje bi Intel kod TSMC-a trebal (zajedno s AMD-om i nVidiom) proizvoditi svoje CPU i GPU modele, a onda kad budu svi na istom naprednom proizvodnom procesu - ostaje im jedino arhitektura koja će činiti konkretnu razliku. Odnosno u godinama koje dolaze, Intel će se vrlo vjerojatno naći u situaciji u kojoj su AMD-ATi i nVidia posljednih 20 godina, pa uredno koriste TSMC-ove pogone, dok se međusobno razlikuju u arhitekturama i pripadajućem napretku. TSMC-u pak totalno svjedno, ionako proizvode za druge, a dokle god ovi imaju novaca - sve super i sve 5.

Je, ali izgleda da je PR mašina u punom pogonu, nekih mjesec dana prije službenog Alder Lake predstavljanja. Sve pršti od rezultata u kojima novi CPU mete sve pred sobom.

Na kraju bi mogel ispasti čušpajz kakav smo gledali s Rocket Lakeom, a prije službenih recenzija bili su najavljivani i očekivani kao najbolji procesori u galaksiji, ako ne i šire.

Zanimljivo da nema nikakvih rezultata iz nekih popularnih igraćih naslova, samo aplikacije koje su od strane Ryana Shrouta bile okarakterizirane kao nedovoljno real-world.

Zanimljivo da nema nikakvih rezultata iz nekih popularnih igraćih naslova, samo aplikacije koje su od strane Ryana Shrouta bile okarakterizirane kao nedovoljno real-world.

Tek one igre koje će bit napravljene za Win 11 i novi thread director će staviti Alder lake pod pravi test.

Intel Thread Director bude upravljal sa svime pomalo u pozadini, ali prednost budu i dalje imale veće/jače jezgre, ne ide Alder Lake na 5.3GHz bez razloga, a Intel i dalje voli visoke taktove ...

It’s important to understand that for the desktop processor with 8 P-cores and 8 E-cores, if there was a 16-thread workload then it will be scheduled across all 8 P-cores with 8 threads, then all 8 E-cores with the other 8 threads. This affords more performance than enabling the hyperthreads on the P-cores, and so software that compares thread-to-thread loading (such as the latest 3DMark CPU Profile test) may be testing something different compared to processors without E-cores.

It all boils down to having the right functionality to help the operating system make decisions about where to put threads that require low latency vs threads that require high efficiency but are not time critical. So it’s easy enough (now) to tell an operating system that different types of cores exist. Each one can have a respective performance and efficiency rating, and the operating system can migrate threads around as required. However the difference between Windows 10 and Windows 11 is how much information is available to the scheduler about what is running.

Intel classifies the performance levels on Alder Lake in the following order:

• One thread per core on P-cores
• Only thread on E-cores
• SMT threads on P-cores

That means the system will load up one thread per P-core and all the E-cores before moving to the hyperthreads on the P-cores.

On top of this, Intel says that Thread Director can also optimize for frequency.

If a thread is limited in a way other than frequency, it can detect this and reduce frequency, voltage, and power.
