Intel claims 32-Core Ice Lake-SP Xeon CPU crushes 64-Core AMD EPYC in these specific workloads
Citiraj:
At Intel Architecture Day 2020 we got more details about both Ice Lake Xeon and Sapphire Rapids. Intel is starting to discuss Sapphire Rapids more in its materials. As the roadmap stands, Ice Lake will be a shorter duration generation with a single chip in the Whitley platform. Sapphire Rapids has new extensions, new memory capabilities, and CXL/ PCIe Gen5. We discussed the 2021 Ice Pickle where Ice Lake is getting its time on the market compressed by Sapphire. Still, Intel has its Ice Lake generation coming out in 2021. Early launch activities have already started before the public release. We get parity with modern Arm and AMD platforms with eight-channel DDR4, new microarchitecture, PCIe Gen4. We checked the performance footnotes. Intel is comparing a pre-production 32 core Ice Lake Xeon to AMD EPYC 7742 64-core part and seeing 20-30% performance uplift. This is impressive, but given AVX512 it is what we may expect here.
Citiraj:
  • Of course, there are a few notes. First, the AMD EPYC 7742 is a 2019 part. AMD has been in volume production with the EPYC 7003 “Milan” series since September 2020 and has been shipping to major cloud providers.
  • These are not ES shipments, these are full volume production. We will get the marketing release for non-HPC/ cloud customers but:
    • Milan is already out which makes this Intel comparing a pre-production 2021 part to a previous-generation AMD part
  • Intel is using Intel MKL in these benchmarks which does not have the best history of being vendor-neutral in its implementation. Milan will have higher TDPs just like Ice Lake.
  • Claiming a 20-30% performance uplift over older generation parts on HPC-specific workloads is not exactly a win given we have some sense of how Ice Lake will perform compared to EPYC in non-HPC workloads.
  • With a 18% uplift in IPC for SPECcpu2017 with Sunny Cove, we expect that for many of these non-HPC AVX-512 workloads Intel will need much higher performance to match AMD’s 64 core parts.

AMD rumored to be working on an Arm-based Apple M1 rival
Citiraj:
The rumor comes from hardware via NotebookCheck. They write that AMD is working on two versions of the chip—one with integrated RAM and one without. The prototype is "almost ready," apparently. AMD has explored the possibility of an Arm-based chip in the past. Back in 2014, news broke that it was developing its own, custom 64-bit ARMv8 CPU core codenamed K12. And in 2016, it announced the K12 Core. The project was to be led by then AMD lead CPU architect Jim Keller, but the SoC was shelved. In May of this year, however, leaker Komachi Ensaka created an AMD roadmap that included a "K12 FFX" with a vague release date of between 2017 – 2022.
Interestingly, AMD boss Lisa Su will present at CES on January 12, 2021. We can expect to hear about the Zen 3-based Ryzen 5000 mobile chips, codenamed Cezanne, as well as the Epyc "Milan" server lineup and possibly RDNA 2-based mobile GPUs. We'll have to wait and see whether K12 gets a mention. As with all rumors, take this one with a pinch of salt. But given AMD's history with the K12 Core, and how well-received the M1 Macs have proved, there might be more to it than mere speculation. With AMD chipping away at Intel's CPU dominance in the latest Steam survey, introducing an Arm-based SoC of its own could be a shrewd move.

Taiwan Semi's Growth Accelerates As AMD Gains Steam
Citiraj:
Based on the current growth trends, AMD is likely to surpass Apple in number of wafer starts in 2021 and become TSMC’s largest customer over time.

Despite this Apple’s growth, we expect AMD business to surpass Apple business at TSMC sometime in 2022!

In Q4 2020, AMD, for the first time, may become a 10% customer at TSMC – second only to Apple.

Ampere Altra performance shows it can compete with - or even outperform - AMD EPYC & Intel Xeon
Citiraj:
While the talk in recent weeks has been about the performance of Apple's M1 ARM chip and then rumors there might be a 32 core chip in the pipe, there is already something much stronger: Ampere Altra has begun shipping and its flagship 80-core SoC with up to two sockets per server can easily take on the AMD EPYC 7742 "Rome" and Intel Xeon Platinum 8280 "Cascade Lake" performance across a variety of workloads. Here is our initial look at the Ampere Altra performance on Linux in our independent performance benchmarks. Ampere Altra's (Quicksilver) cores are based on Arm's Neoverse N1 with modifications and fabricated on TSMC's N7 process. Also significant with Ampere Altra is eight channels of DDR4-3200 memory support and capable of addressing 4TB of memory per socket. On the connectivity front, Ampere Altra supports 128 PCI Express Gen4 lanes for 1P configurations and 192 PCIe 4.0 lanes for 2P configurations. Ampere Altra can also support up to four CCIX accelerators. The Ampere Altra SKU we have been testing is the Q80-33 that offers 80 cores with a 3.3GHz max clock frequency and is rated for a 250 Watt TDP.
Citiraj:
So while Apple's M1 has done a good job for showing the ARM desktop performance potential, Ampere Altra's Q80 series shows what the performance can be like at the top-end for ARM within server and cloud deployments now actually providing serious competition against the current generation Intel Xeon and AMD EPYC servers. Looking ahead, Intel Ice Lake Xeon and AMD EPYC Milan are both expected next quarter. In fighting that Ampere already has their announced 128-core Ampere Altra Max (Mystique) processor that will retain socket compatibility with Ampere Altra and will be in production later in 2021. Given what we have seen with Ampere Altra, it will be very interesting to see how much of a performance leap they can achieve going forward with Mystique.

Sve konfiguracije imaju dual-socket, 2x ARM vs. 2x EPYC i 2x Xeon.

Citiraj:
Intel's manufacturing outlook for the future doesn't inspire confidence in successful competition
Citiraj:
  • 10 nm in "full production" and "shipping for revenue" since late 2018. Charlie still doesn't think it's viable. Much more real than it once was though, but not good enough.

  • Superfin is unquestionably far better than base 10 nm. Better in just about every way. Yields are better, but still on the low side.

  • Not enough 10 nm capacity to handle the entire product stack yet. Charlie doesn't like Rocket Lake, considers the backport "painfully stupid". Will be huge and a power hog.

  • 14 nm shortage caused by the fact that Intel had to bloat up die sizes.

  • Ice Lake delayed again due to a bug, but this is a good thing. Looking like it'll come mid-late Q2 to early Q3 (although Charlie originally said March + 1.5-2 month delay?).

  • Performance looks pretty poor. Akin to CL-SP actually - performance per socket remains the same but power rises. Core count for shipping parts dropped from 38 -> 36.

  • Ice Lake is disappointing. Sapphire Rapids is way better. Comes in Q2 22.

  • Once SPR fully rolls out and is fully sorted out it'll actually be pretty solid.

  • If both companies iterate perfectly on their roadmaps as planned (much easier on AMD's side right now), Intel can not catch up to AMD until late 2024 or early 2025.

  • AMD's biggest problem? Unsurprisingly - capacity.

  • 7nm is significantly more delayed than the 6-12 months first claimed. PVC is in-hands basically now and it was the first 7nm product. Now it's on TSMC. Sometime December this year anyway.

  • Intel may not know how much of a delay we're looking at with 7.

  • Doesn't think Intel could sell fabs. Too many things problems
involved. Fabs would need to be evaluated for the buyers needs etc etc.

  • Intel are going to out-source CPUs, but what and where is still being debated internally. Decision will be made in Q1 between SS and TSMC for different products. Nothing is set in stone yet.

  • Intel are looking for a new CEO. There are multiple candidates, one has been shot down, 3 potential left. They are hoping to make the decision in Q1, probably after the Jan call. Does seem like Bob's going either way.

  • Question: Will Intel do anything else with the backported core? A: I hope not.

  • Intel won't outsource everything to TSMC because TSMC doesn't have the capacity. Intel grabbing capacity shouldn't take capacity away from AMD - TSMC should prioritise customers with long-term plans to stay with them.

  • There is a 10 nm desktop product coming (Alder Lake-S) but Charlie doubts there will be much capacity for it due to it being needed elsewhere.
