AMD has finally named its next-generation desktop processors; and the new name is Phenom. At the top of the product lineup we have the Phenom FX processors. These processors will be quad-core only and run at the highest clock speeds in AMD's lineup. Phenom FX processors will be available in both Socket-1207 and Socket-AM2 flavors. The X4 and X2 will be Socket-AM2/AM2+ only and are 100% backwards compatible with current AM2 motherboards.

Phenom will work in current Socket-AM2/Socket-1207 motherboards with a BIOS update, but it loses the ability to run its Northbridge and CPU cores at separate voltages/clock frequencies. If you buy a new Socket-AM2+/Socket-1207+ motherboard, then the CPU cores and Northbridge can run at separate voltages/frequencies. The benefit of doing this is not only power savings, but AMD has indicated that it can actually run the Northbridge faster than the CPU cores (by 200 - 400MHz) which will improve performance. The L3 cache happens to run on the same voltage plane and at the same frequency as the Northbridge, compounding the performance benefits of using a new "plus-socket" motherboard (Socket-AM2+/Socket-1207+).

Given that Phenom will be DDR2 from the start, it looks like AMD's transition to DDR3 will be much like its transition to DDR2: it will complete well after Intel has made the move. AMD's current roadmap shows the second generation Phenom core (Shanghai) due out in 2008 but still on Socket-AM2+/1207+. It's quite possible that AMD will introduce another socket in late 2008 (AM3?) that will offer DDR3 support to begin its transition to the new memory technology.

Gigabyte today announced the first mini DTX motherboard catering towards home servers. The new Churchill motherboard supports AMD’s Socket AM2 Athlon 64 and Sempron single and dual-core processors. Gigabyte equips Churchill with a SiS761GX north and SiS966 south bridges. The SiS761GX features an integrated Mirage 1 graphics core with DirectX 7 support. Other notable features of the Churchill motherboard include one PCIe x1, one PCI, six SATA 1.5 Gbps/sec ports with support for native command queuing, eight USB 2.0 ports and high definition audio support. Expect Gigabyte to release the motherboard in July.

DTX:
It is for small form factor PCs (especially for HTPCs) with dimensions of 200 mm by 244 mm. AMD stated that the DTX form factor is an open standard, and is backward compatible with ATX form factor cases. They also present a variant named Mini-DTX which is smaller in PCB size of 200 mm by 170 mm.
Upcoming DTX boards will likely contain one PCI-Express slot and one PCI slot. The spec also provides for optional ExpressCard expansion slots on DTX motherboards.

• Mini-DTX will allow up to six motherboards – for low cost – per standard printed circuit board manufacturing panel sizes

Jetway has announced 5 new products based on AMD 570X chipset. AMD 570X chipset supports CrossFire just like AMD 580X and AMD 480X. The difference is that it supports one 16X/8X + 8X. The models are variants of M2A581 series and HA02 series.

Jetway M2A581

• M2A581 uses AMD 570X+S600 chipsets. AMD 570X supports 1X PCIe x16 + 1 X PCIe x8 connectors, it supports CrossFire using HD2000 graphics cards. AMD 570X supports AMD AM2 processors, DDR II, PCI,, PCI-E SATA2, USB2.0. The board also comes with GB LAN (RTL8111B) and HD AUDIO (ALC888).

Jetway HA02

• HA02 also uses the AMD 570X +SB600 chipset and promises more overclocking features. The HA02 has one less PCIe X1 and it is replaced by a PCI slot. HA02 has all the functions of M2A581-SGE e.g ESATA, DEBUG etc. It also has optical out (M2A581 does not have). HA02 has two models: HA02-GT and HA02-GTE. GTE is similar to GT with the addition of IEEE1394A.

Griffin + Puma mobilna arhitektura

Griffin will be a 65nm dual-core chip with 1MB of L2 cache per core and it won't have a shared L3 cache. But it will nonetheless have split power planes between both cores and the north bridge/memory controller. The chip will also be able to scale to 1/8th of its rated clock speed in order to conserve power. Further power savings will be brought by HyperTransport 3.0, which will dynamically scale link widths to save energy. On the memory front Griffin will support DDR2-667 and DDR2-800 memory, and perhaps even DDR2-1066 like Barcelona. Puma platform will include a new chipset dubbed 780G. AMD's slides say the 780G will monitor I/O and the processor's power state to establish the "optimal power management profile for a given set of system conditions.

AMD BE-2350 still based on 65nm design, this CPU has a lower TDP of only 45W. From the CPU-Z screen using v1.39 and v1.40. This CPU is recognised as Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor BE-2350. It runs at a multiplier of 10.5x and bus speed is at 200MHz. HT is at 1GHz. From what we gathered, AMD is also changing its branding of this new processors, the BE-2XXX series. They won't be called Athlon 64 X2. Instead it will be known as Athlon X2 Dual Core. The "64" is dropped. No reasons were given for dropping the "64".

• A few days ago, we reported that Jetway will have 5 new models of mainboard based on this AMD 570X chipset. Officially, this chipset officially supports a 16x + 8x slot. It can run CrossFire in a Dual 8x mode. We received information that this chipset is similar to the 580X and it can actually turn on the remaining 8x PCIe to make the chipset support full DUAL 16x just like the 580X.

AMD began sampling its upcoming Athlon 64 X2 BE-2000-series processors. The new Athlon 64 X2 BE-2000-series remains based on AMD’s 65nm Brisbane-core, but with lower thermal ratings. AMD Athlon BE-2000-series processors will arrive with 45-watt TDP ratings, equaling that of the energy efficient single-core processors. As with other Brisbane-based processors, the AMD Athlon 64 X2 BE-2000-series feature 2x512KB of L2 cache, 2000 MHz HyperTransport speed and AMD Virtualization technology.
Expect AMD to debut its Athlon 64 X2 BE-2300 and BE-2350 next month. The Athlon 64 X2 BE-2400 will arrive later, in August.

On June 5th, AMD will launch its Athlon X2 BE-2350 and 2300 processors. The new Athlon X2 BE-series marks the debut of AMD’s new naming scheme. In addition to the Athlon X2 BE-series, AMD is to revamping its complete product lineup using the alphanumeric scheme. The new naming scheme designates the first letter as the processor class.

AMD currently has three processor classes for the new scheme – G, B and L.

• All G-class processors are designated as premium processors under the Phenom X4 and X2 names.
• The B-class processors slot below the G-class processors as an intermediate model.
• At the bottom of the AMD ladder is the L-class processors. L-class processors carry the AMD Athlon or Sempron names.

The second letter in the model designates thermal design power class. AMD P-class processors have TDPs greater than 65-watts; S-class processors have TDPs of approximately 65-watt while E-class processors have less than 65-watt TDPs. Under the new naming scheme, upcoming Stars-family dual and quad-core processors will carry the AMD Phenom X2 GS-6xxx and Phenom X4 GP-7xxx names. Value-priced AMD Athlon and Sempron processors will carry the Athlon X2 LS-2xxx and Sempron LE-1xxx names.

Power consumption is definitely down over the standard 65nm 65W Athlon 64 X2s, but not as low as the old 35W EE SFF parts were. Power consumption and thermal testing, however, did show a significant decrease compared to both 65w processors. Athlon X2 BE-2350 performed exactly as we expected today. Unlike other low power consuming chips where clock speed is severely compromised, the BE-2350 performs as a similarly clocked previous generation X2. Intel currently has no direct answer to this kind of performance at these power levels giving AMD a chance to fall into some unique system designs like home theater PCs and even some small form-factor boxes. The performance of this chip really needs to be taken into consideration when looking at its price as well as its power consumption levels.

On July 9th AMD desktop processor family will have a reduction in suggested prices. Savings for the AMD Athlon 64 X2 (dual-core) processor family will be about 20% and the AMD Athlon 64 (single-core) processor family will be adjusted by approximately 15%. If you are looking for a great value, look to the AMD Sempron processor, which will also offer savings of about 15%.

• Gigabyte is the only partner to have a live demonstration of RD790, from what we have seen. The Gigabyte GA-M790-DQ6 features four PCIe 2.0 x16 slots capable of dual x16 or quad x8 configurations. The Gigabyte GA-M790-DQ6 does not have any PCIe x1 slots. However, the GA-M790-DQ6 features two standard PCI slots.
  
  
• Asus have a rather stylish looking RD790 motherboard at their booth which will support upcoming 45nm AM2+ processors from AMD. The upcoming Asus M3A32-MVP Deluxe supports Socket AM2+ processors with HyperTransport 3.0, or HT3. The board features dual PCIe 2.0 x16, three PCI and one PCIe x1 slots. The Asus M3A32-MVP Deluxe will also support DDR2-1066 memory.
  
  
• The Asus M3A-MVP features the mainstream RD780 chipset with a cut-down PCIe lane configuration. Asus equips the M3A-MVP with two physical PCIe 2.0 x16 slots. The PCIe 2.0 x16 slots default to dual eight-lane configurations when both slots are occupied.

Expect AMD RD790, RD780 and RX780 motherboards later this year.

The upcoming series 7 will introduce support for HyperTransport 3.0 for AMD's processors - and reportedly AMD has decided not to release series 7 chipsets for Intel CPU's, thus putting an end to the RD700, RS700, and RC710.

Here is a breakdown of the expected chipsets:

• RD790 will adopt PCIe 2.0 - this will be the high end chipset, scheduled for Q4
• RX780 will be the mainstream chipset, scheduled for Q3
• RS740 will feature an integrated DX9 capable GPU, scheduled for Q3
• RS780 will have a DX10 capable GPU with AMD's "UVD" (universal video decoder) scheduled for Q4

The chipsets will initially use the existing SB600 southbridge, but apparently AMD plans to release a SB700 in Q4.

The newest information showed that AMD will launch GS-6550, GP-7000 and 7100 products in Q4; GP-6800, GS-6650, GE-6600, 6500 and 6400 in 2008 Q1.

The clock range of:

• 7100 is 2.2-2.4GHz
• 7000 is 2.0-2.2GHz
• 6800 is 2.4-2.8GHz
• 6650 is 2.2-2.6GHz
• 6550 is 2.0-2.4GHz

The high-end desktop FX series will remain its name methods including FX-80 and FX-9x. Only FX-9x is 1207+ interface. FX-80 clock is 2.2-2.4GHz the same with FX-90. FX-91 is 2.4-2.6GHz.

This June the company is going to launch 65nm version of their Athlon 64 X2 5200+ processors on Brisbane core that will hit 2.7GHz frequency. Note that a lot of Brisbane processors are now capable of overclocking to 2.8GHz with the nominal Vcore that is why it may strike you as a bit surprising that AMD has been holding off the launch of faster 65nm 64 X2 CPUs for a while.
