Citiraj:
Intel CEO confirms TSMC’s process nodes to power next-gen CPUs: N3 for Arrow Lake & N3B for Lunar Lake. In a press and analyst session following the IFS Direct 2024 event, Intel's CEO Pat Gelsinger confirmed that Chipzilla is leveraging TSMC's advanced process node technology to power its upcoming CPUs codenamed Arrow Lake and Lunar Lake. During the session, Pat stated that Intel has been collaborating with TSMC for its CPU designs and that next-gen CPUs such as Arrow Lake and Lunar Lake will advance this from 5nm to 3nm nodes.

US govt's CHIPS Act gives Intel $8.5 billion in funding and a 25% tax credit on $100 billion in investments
Citiraj:
The U.S. Commerce Department announced today that it has come to a preliminary agreement with Intel to provide the chipmaker with $8.5 billion in direct funding for commercial semiconductor manufacturing in the United States, along with $11 billion in loans with a low interest rate and a 25% investment tax credit on up to $100 billion of Intel’s capital investments. The funding comes as the byproduct of the CHIPS Act, which seeks to provide direct funding to revitalize domestic chip production.

The funding will help offset costs for Intel’s chipmaking facilities in Arizona, New Mexico, Ohio, and Oregon. Aside from the direct $8.5 billion in funding, Intel will also be eligible for $11 billion in loans from the Commerce Department. Intel says these are long-term loans at very low interest rates but didn’t elaborate on the specific terms. The loans will help Intel secure funding for the large capital investments required to build leading-edge fabs while also potentially reducing the need for further funding partnerships like the deal it signed with Brookfield earlier this year, which involved granting Brookfield a 49% ownership stake in Intel’s Arizona fab in exchange for $15 billion in funding.

The CHIPS funds will go to new fabs and advanced packaging facilities located across four states. Intel will build two leading-edge fabs in Chandler, Arizona, to build chips on its Intel 18A node. Two fabs will be converted into packaging facilities in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Intel's New Albany, Ohio, campus will see two planned leading-edge fabs, and Intel's Hillsboro, Oregon campus will see "expansion and modernization," including high N.A. extreme ultraviolet lithography from ASML that Intel recently started installing. Intel expects 25 to 30% of its investments to go to building the manufacturing facilities, with the remaining ~70% spent on the tools it will install in the fabs.
Citiraj:
Intel pushes launch date of Ohio fab from 2025 to 2027 or 2028 – state politicians remain enthusiastic about progress
Citiraj:
Intel has submitted a progress report to the Ohio Department of Development. Its progress in developing two new semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Licking County hasn't been stellar though, far from it. The iconic US chipmaker promised $20 billion of investment in the project and that the new fabs would be operational by 2025. However, the report (PDF) published by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine on Friday suggests that Intel has invested just $1.5 billion and the fabs will be operational "between 2027 and 2028." Construction of Intel's New Albany, Ohio fabrication site started back in late 2022—since then, a series of setbacks have caused anticipated timelines to slip. Team Blue's original plans included a 2025 opening ceremony—last month, this was amended to late 2026 or early 2027. New equipment deliveries have been affected by extreme weather conditions—Intel appears to be shoring up its flood prevention systems at their Licking County location.

Intel 20A/18A delayed to 16th Gen CPUs: Arrow & Lunar Lake on TSMC 3nm?
Citiraj:
Following the launch of the Core Ultra “Meteor Lake” processors based on the Intel 4 node, the pace of IDM 2.0 has slowed down. Contrary to earlier claims, Arrow Lake and Lunar Lake are both TSMC 3nm (N3B) designs, including the compute tile. Multiple sources (1 - 2) have confirmed that the 15th Gen Arrow Lake family will comprise a CPU tile fabbed on TSMC’s 3nm (N3B) process, with only a few lower-end desktop (Arrow Lake-S) parts leveraging the Intel 20A node. Neither the Arrow Lake-P notebook nor the Arrow Lake-S flagship processors will feature the 20A node, instead relying on TSMC’s N3B process for their CPU tile supply. Lunar Lake won’t be any different. These mobile-only chips will also feature a compute tile fabbed on the TSMC “N3B” 3nm node and an iGPU tile fabbed on N4/N3.

Citiraj:
  • Intel foundry unit loses $7 billion in 2023, company outsources 30% of its production to TSMC
    Citiraj:
About one-third of Intel's products are now made by the company's foundry partners, mainly TSMC. This has a negative effect on the company's margins since Intel has to pay premiums to contract chip makers. Meanwhile, Intel re-released its financials for the last three years, which shows that its own foundry unit lost some $7 billion last year as it invested in new capacity and tools for next-generation process technologies. It's noteworthy that the foundry unit did not operate as a separate entity during the entire 2023 time frame, meaning the re-factored numbers aren't entirely indicative of the units' performance, or the cost-saving measures that will take place as it now operates as its own independent unit. Once the new nodes come online, Intel hopes to reduce outsourcing to below 20%, its traditional percentage of outsourcing, which will significantly improve its margins. Starting from Q1 2025, Intel will adopt a new operating model that establishes a foundry relationship between Intel Foundry, the company’s manufacturing organization, and Intel Products, which includes the company's business units.
  • Intel outlines new financial reporting structure

  • Intel Foundry operating model shown with path to process leadership
    Citiraj:
Intel today showed its recast financials using the Intel Foundry Operating Model. This is a big deal because it, in theory, is going to allow its products business (the one that makes Core, Xeon, and more) to be more competitive, while also getting serious about Intel Foundry operations. This may not seem like a big deal, but Intel has been looking to woo 3rd party customers for its Foundry business, and this split makes the Foundry and the Intel Products group somewhat separate businesses. With the new model, Intel Foundry will sell products to Intel Products. Intel Products, can choose to source packages from Intel Foundry or other parties like TSMC. Given we are in a chiplet world already, it might be more accurate to say Intel Products can source from a number of manufacturers and then put the pieces together to make parts.

Intel Foundry to the world rescue!

Vijesti i novosti o Intel procesorima i čipsetima

Intel is gunning for nVidia
Citiraj:
  • nVidia blames Intel for GPU VRAM errors, tells GeForce gamers experiencing 13th or 14th Gen CPU instability to contact Intel support
    Citiraj:
Nvidia's latest 552.12 driver patch notes reveal that the GPU manufacturer is aware of stability issues plaguing many Raptor Lake and Raptor Lake Refresh gamers. Nvidia specifies that users experiencing crashes with a 13th or 14th Gen CPU should consult Intel for their troubles. Specifically, Nvidia's patch notes state that if 13th/14th Gen CPU owners are experiencing "...stability issues/out of video memory error messages/crash to desktop while the game is compiling shaders..." to consult two sites consisting of an Intel community page and a tutorial from Rad Game Tools on how to reduce CPU power limits to Intel's default specifications.
  • nVidia points Intel Raptor Lake CPU users to get help from Intel amid system instability issues
    Citiraj:
nVidia has addressed reported stability problems users are experiencing with Intel's latest 13th and 14th generation Raptor Lake Core processors, especially the high-performance overclockable K-series models. In a recent statement, nVidia recommended that owners of the affected Intel CPUs consult directly with Intel if they encounter issues such as system instability, video memory errors, game crashes, or failures to launch certain applications. The problems seem particularly prevalent when running demanding workloads like gaming on Unreal Engine 5 titles or during shader compilation tasks that heavily utilize the processor and graphics capabilities. Intel has established a dedicated website to provide support for these CPU instability cases. However, the chipmaker still needs to issue a broad public statement and provide a definitive resolution.
Intel CEO definitivno djeluje zastrašujuće dok se spotiče po pozornici i sramoti jedva izgovarajući ključne PR riječi.
