'AMD lately is fighting that 120W barrier and I guess, they just are letting it go. As such AMD is planning to release two new processors next month; the Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition and the Athlon II X4 630.

Report on the web claim these Phenom II X4 965 BE processors as such may have a TDP of as high as 140W.

The AMD Athlon II X4 630 on the other hand is a quad-core chip with a 65W TDP. This model features a 2.8GHz clockspeed, 2MB L2 cache, no L3 cache, and dual-channel DDR2/DDR3 memory controller. It's said to be available on August 23rd, 2009.

Additionally, we can also expect new Athlon II X3 processors in September or October and some new Athlon II X4 models sometime this Fall.'

Gigabyte dropped off their GA-MA785GPMT-UD2H motherboard today that is based on the AMD 785G/SB710 chipsets. This is a chipset that we have had our sights set on for long time now as it addresses the lack of multi-channel LPCM audio out lacking in the 690G/780G/790GX chipsets along with other video playback enhancements. The additional bonus with this chipset is improved integrated graphics performance and full support for the AM3 processors.

In early testing, this board has performed superbly, so much so, that we will be running it around the clock to get a performance preview up for you this weekend. We need to discuss a couple of items with AMD on Monday morning concerning the beta driver set we received before publishing preliminary results. Gigabyte has done a masterful job with the 785G/SB710 chipsets on this board. However, the early video drivers are generating a few strange results in HD playback and PCMark Vantage. We also believe our Sims3 game scores are a bit low based on the new hardware although they are better than the 780G.

This board is a full ATX mainboard and uses all solid caps. It supportsr Socket AM3 processors: AMD PhenomTM II X4 / X3 / X2 (except 920 / 940) and Athlon II X4 / X3 / X2 processors of up to 140W. Gigabyte MA785GPM-UD2H

Last year, AMD stormed the market with it's AMD 780G chipset which was well received by many enthusiasts. This July, AMD launch it's brand new chipset the AMD 785G. As it's name implies, it is an upgraded chipset of 780G. (previously it was known to be RS880). This new integrated core is named ATi Radeon HD 4200. This new chipset has some added on features and they include DX10.1 and UVD 2.0 support, Hardware Picture in Picture, Dynamic COntrast, high Quality Video Scaling, Accelerated Transcode and Effficient PowerPlay.

Similar to the older chipset, this chipset also support DDR2 or DDR3 modules and one PCIe x16 lane for external graphics card. It also support IGP for HDMI, D-SUB or DVI-D display output.
This board we have on hand has a 128M sideport memory and the iGPU can be overclocked as well.
Other than that, the chipset support Hybrid CrossFire when the board is paired up with a supporting graphics card.

Back the the board. The MA785GPM-UD2H supports the AMD AM2/2+/3 Phenom II processors with a Hypertransport bus of 5200/2000 MT/s. It is powered by 785G+SB710 chipsets. There are 4 x 1.8v DDR2 DIMM slots supporting up to 16GB of system memory on board. It supports DDR2-1200(oc)/1066/800MHz memory modules. For graphics memory, it is shared with the on board DDR2 module and 128MB DDR3 of sideport memory powered by Elpida. For multimedia, it has 3 output ports, D-SUB, DVI-D and 1 HDMI port. It uses the Realtek ALC889A 7.1ch HDA codec supporting Dolby home theater and SPDIF IN/out. The LAN is powered by a Realtek RTL8111C chipset.

The south bridge supports the 1 x IDE connector, 5 SATA II ports with RAID 0,1,10,JBOD. The 6th port functions as a eSATA port. It can support up to 12 USB ports (6 already at back panel, 6 more via brackets). 1394 is support by Texas instrument chipset TSB43Ab23 chip, 1 on back panel, 1 via 1394a bracket connected to onboard header. Other Gigabyte features include Ultra Durable 3 which is 2Oz Copper PCB to run the board cooler, 50000 Hr Japanese solid Caps, Dual BIOS. It also has Easy Energy Saver - auto adjust CPu power depending on workload. , EC AOD-ACC and FullHD 1080P bluray playback support.

AM3 "Sargas" Semproni

AMD is preparing its first set of Sempron processors based on the DDR3 supportive AM3 package. The first one, codenamed "Sargas" is a single-core chip that comes across as a single-core variant of the Athlon II X2 "Regor". It features a broad 3.6 GT/s HyperTransport 3.0 system interface, 128 KB of L1 and 1 MB of L2 cache, a dual-channel DDR2/DDR3 memory interface, an up-to-date AMD feature and instruction-set including AMD64, SSE4A, and AMD-V. Sargas is built on Global Foundries' 45 nm SOI process, and has an operating voltage range of 0.85 ~ 1.35 V. The first SKU based on this core is the Sempron X1 140 (model: SDX140HBGQBOX). It has a clock speed of 2.70 GHz, and a bus multiplier of 13.5x. At that speed, its TDP is rated at 45W. It will be available towards the end of this week, priced around 35 Euro.

We recently previewed the 785G chipset and had to stop testing as the early beta drivers were not mature enough to provide a full performance analysis. We have since received two updated sets of drivers and are glad to report that significant progress has been made in enabling a variety of features missing in the first set. In the meantime, AMD is allowing limited press coverage (pictures with just a few words of text) on the 785G motherboards. We still have boards from MSI, Biostar, ECS, and ASRock coming along with additional models from Gigabyte and Asus that we hope to provide a quick glimpse at before the NDA lifts next month.

The star of today's show is Asus' M4A785TD-V EVO that features AMD's 785G/SB710 chipset combination along with 128MB of DDR3 SidePort memory. The AMD 785G features the updated HD 4200 graphics engine that adds DirectX 10.1 and UVD 2.0 features along with multi-channel LPCM audio output to the mix compared to the previous generation HD 3200 on the 780G chipset. This particular board is part of Asus' new EVO lineup that features improved cooling (StackCool 3), components, software, and specific BIOS options to provide additional performance over their entry level products.

This is an AMD based motherboard in the MicroATX form factor. It's not really designed for gaming or overclocking but rather for the high-end user looking for a smaller motherboard with an upgraded audio option. On the surface this looks like the next great thing for the HTPC. Gamers are not entirely left out either. The Deluxe edition comes with 128MB of dedicated onboard DDR3 and Hybrid Crossfire or you can simply replace the onboard option with an external video card of your choice. This board is done and almost ready to go, the Cinema board should launch with the AM2+ socket as that will provide the most compatibility in the market.

MSI 785GM-E65

The board is a true AM3 product, and it only supports AM3 CPUs and DDR-3 up to 1600 MHz. It utilizes the SB710 southbridge, which contains all of the same features as the more expensive SB750, except without the support for RAID 5. It features 5 internal SATA ports, and 1 e-SATA port on the backplane. It features 6 USB ports on the backplane, and another 3 USB headers on the motherboard itself (for a total of 12 possible USB ports). The power circuitry does not feature MSI's Dr.MOS technology, but it still is a pretty beefy 4+1 phase array. All caps on the board are solid/polymer and the chokes are the ferrite core units.

The backplate features the aforementioned 6 USB ports, as well as 1 PS2 keyboard/mouse port, optical SPDIF port, DB-15 (VGA), DVI, HDMI, Firewire, e-SATA, Gig-E, and 6 analog audio plugs. The HDMI port is of great interest because of the upgraded 785G, which is now HDMI 1.3 compliant and can support 8 PCM streams. Perhaps the most interesting little feature about this board is the inclusion of a dipswitch which controls FSB overclocking. There are four settings which can take the FSB from stock speed, up through 10%, 15%, and 20% overclock. While the FSB can be controlled in the BIOS as well, it is interesting to see a motherboard manufacturer go back to dipswitch overclocking.

ASRock 785G AM3 ploče

ASRock is introducing two 785G motherboards today. The M3A785GXH/128M features an ATX design equipped with the SB710 Southbridge, 16GB of DDR3 support, 128MB of DDR3 SidePort memory, three PCIe x16 slots (x16/x4 or x8,x8,x4), single PCIe x1 slot, and two PCI slots. The usual assortment of Gigabit LAN, 8-channel HD audio, AOD/ACC functions, HDMI/DVI/VGA output, and six SATA 3Gb/s ports are included. The M3A785GMH/128M features a uATX design that is equipped with similar specifications to its ATX sibling. The primary difference being the layout with a single x16 PCIe 2.0 slot, single PCIe x1 slot, and two PCI slots. Both boards fully support ASRock’s Instant Boot, EZ OC, and IES technologies. They are also EuP (Energy using Product) and Windows 7 hardware ready.

Asus M4A79XTD EVO

The top motherboard manufacturer Asus is gearing up to release a new AM3 board, the M4A79XTD EVO. Based on AMD 790X + SB750 chipset, the board features an 8+2 phase power design, supports AMD Phenom II and Athlon II processors, and comes with four DDR3-1800 memory slots as well as two PCIe x16 slots for CrossFireX setups. Boasting one eSATA and seven SATA 3.0Gbps ports, 7.1 channel audio, Gigabit Ethernet, and one FireWire connector, Asus’ AM3 motherboard is expected to be available later this month.

MSI NF750-G50 SLi

MSI is ready with perhaps the industry's first SLi-supportive socket AM3 motherboard, certainly its first. The MSI NF750-G55 is based on nVidia nForce 750a SLi chipset, and has its AM3 socket powered by a 4+1 phase circuit, that supports Active Phase Switching that powers down redundant power phases when the load is low. The socket is wired to four DDR3 memory slots supporting up to DDR3-1800 by overclocking.

The nForce chipset connects to two PCI-Express 2.0 x16 slots that arrange as electrical dual x8 when both are populated for 2-way SLi. Apart from this, the chipset also embeds a GeForce 8300 class IGP as a fallback, or for GeForce Boost features. The IGP connects using D-Sub, HDMI, and DVI-D. Other expansion slots include two PCI-E x1, and one PCI. The chipset provides six SATA II ports in all, one of which is designated as eSATA on the rear-panel, next to one gigabit Ethernet, a number of USB 2.0 and FireWire ports, and 8-channel audio. The NF750-G50 has started selling in Europe for under 100 Euros.

AMD 785G + SB710 čipset

Today we get to officially unveil the 785G, the latest in integrated graphics chipsets by AMD for AMD. As the name implies, there is very little separating 785G from its predecessor (780G) and we’re quite ok with that. In fact, the only reason not to get a 780G is addressed by the 785: the new chipset supports 8-channel LPCM audio over HDMI. The lack of TrueHD and DTS-HD audio bit-streaming remains but neither is this feature supported on other chipsets. We also see a jump from HDMI 1.2 to 1.3 standards. The rest of the major improvements are strictly related to video playback duties. We jump from Universal Video Decoder (UVD) 1.0 on the 780G to UVD 2.0 capabilities on the 785G. The video decode engine supports decoding multiple HD streams (useful for picture-in-picture on a Blu-ray movie) and additional post processing effects if you are not a big video purist. Also new is the 785G's ability to perform detail enhancements on the fly.

The graphics side has not really changed that much. The new GPU is based off the RV620 core and is roughly the same size/complexity as the old one. The 785G’s PowerPlay technology is improved with the core constantly adjusting clock speeds based on GPU utilization with a 60MHz target when idling compared to 500MHz at full load. AMD adds DirectX 10.1 support but stream processor count and clock speeds have not changed. Thus gaming performance remains mostly unchanged. The Radeon HD 4200 is where all the action is with this update but the more things change, the more they remain the same. We still have the traditional Northbridge/Southbridge layout with the NB supporting a 2GHz HyperTransport link compatible with the latest Socket AM3 processors. The 22 PCI Express 2.0 lanes are still around along with the four lane PCI Express 1.1 lanes supporting the A-Link Express connection between the two bridges.

The SB710 is essentially an updated SB700 with ACC (Advanced Clock Calibration) support, or looking at it a different way, a cost reduced SB750 without support for RAID 5 arrays. The SB710 has six 300MB/s Serial ATA ports with RAID 0, 1, and 0+1 support plus a single IDE port supporting two drives so JMicron and Marvell are held at bay on these systems. Twelve USB ports and a high-definition audio interface round out the SB710 as native GbE support is still missing. On the ECS board we received this embedded GPU is clocked at 700MHz, and as a Radeon HD 4000-series product, it brings with it support for DirectX 10.1; this ECS board even comes packed with HDMI, DVI and VGA outputs and as such it sounds like an optimal HTPC and office PC chipset. But the biggest change is the integration of that R4200 graphics core.

MSI is ready with yet another motherboard for the AMD platform. This time, the company used nVidia's creme de la creme nForce 980a SLi chipset in its first socket AM3 implementation. The MSI NF980-G65 brings 3-way SLI to the socket AM3 crowd. The NF980-G65 supports the entire range of socket AM3 processors, including future chips with 140W TDP. DDR3-2133 MHz memory is supported by overclocking. The layout uses 7 expansion slots, including three PCI-E 2.0 x16 slots (that arrange as x16, x16, NC, or x16, x8, x8) depending on the population of PCI-E x16 graphics cards. Between these are two PCI-E x1, and two PCI slots.

nForce 980a SLi packs a GeForce 8300 class IGP, which supports GeForce Boost with supported low-end discrete graphics cards. Its display output is handled by DVI-D, D-Sub, and HDMI connectors on board. All the chipset's six SATA II ports are provided internally. Audio is care of a high-grade Realtek ALC889 CODEC, gigabit Ethernet, and FireWire make for the rest of the connectivity. Pricing and availability are not known at this point, though we expect this one to sell for under US $200.

AMD has just announced two new dual-core, 18W TDP processors with an embedded-friendly ball grid array (BGA) package, the AMD Turion Neo X2 L625 and Athlon Neo X2 L325. Based on 65nm technology, Turion Neo X2 L625 and Athlon Neo X2 L325 feature 1.6GHz and 1.5GHz clock speed, L2 cache of 2×512KB and 2×256KB, supporting DDR2 667/533 SO-DIMM/U-DIMM memory. When combined with either the AMD 780E or M690E chipset, embedded system designers can take advantage of a complete x86-based solution that can help streamline development, minimize time to market and offers leading-edge graphics capability.

The new AMD Business Class platform will not only feature more advanced core-logic, but will also boast with higher-performance Athlon II and Phenom II B-series microprocessors based on improved K10 micro-architecture. The new AMD commercial platform is code-named Kodiak and is based on AMD 785G + SB710 core-logic with DASH compliant LOM (lights out management) chip as well as trusted platform module 1.2 (TPM) 1.2 from a third party. The AMD 785G features DirectX 10.1 graphics core with universal video decoder 2.0 and supports DisplayPort, DVI, HDMI and VGA outputs along with add-on PCI Express 2.0 graphics card.

In addition, AMD will introduce its new AMD Athlon II and Phenom II microprocessors B-series that will utilize new model numbering scheme and gradually replace its existing Business Class chips based on older micro-architecture. The new processors will come in AM3 packaging and will support dual-channel DDR3 memory. At present exact specifications of the new microprocessors are unknown, but it is known that in Q3 2009 the company plans to introduce the following models:

• AMD Phenom II X4 B93, B95: 8MB cache, enhanced idle power, 1333MHz memory;
• AMD Phenom II X3 B73, B75: 7.5MB cache, enhanced idle power, 1333MHz memory;
• AMD Phenom II X2 B53, B55: 7MB cache, enhanced idle power, 1066MHz memory;

The Deneb-based Phenom II X4 an X3 have been a great success, by any measure, snatching the price-performance crown from Intel. However, behind the low prices, AMD's margins took a hit as the Deneb core's 6MB L3 cache took a lot of die space - leading to a die size of nearly 260 mm2, well above Intel's Core 2 Quad, which weigh in at 214 mm2, and nearly that of the faster Core i7 CPUs. The solution? Completely do away with the L3 cache. As a result, this decreases the die size considerably, bringing the Propus core to an estimated 160 mm2. This means AMD can sell the quad core CPU at a far more affordable price than its Phenom II counterparts.

The result? Truly affordable quad core CPUs - well below the price of comparative dual cores from Intel. The base model - Athlon II X4 620 is a 2.6GHz part, now selling at various European/UK stores such as Technalogic and Povdirect for a price below Intel's E7xxx dual cores, let alone E8xxx series or Core 2 Quads. Even the 2.8 GHz Athlon II X4 630 is available for a full £20 cheaper than the cheapest Core 2 Quad - the crippled 2.33 GHz Q8200 with 4MB L2 cache. Sure, the lack of a large L3 cache will significantly reduce performance on cache-dependent applications such as video encoding or gaming - but a reasonably clocked quad core at the price of a cheap dual core is a bargain too good to pass up on.

In addition to bringing quad core CPUs to the entry-level, AMD also brings them to the ultra-efficient 45W TDP in the form of 2.2 and 2.3GHz clocked Athlon II X4 600e and 605e. Also releasing at 45W are energy efficient Regor based dual cores and Rana tri-cores, which will be die harvested versions of the Propus cores. Higher clocked Rana tri-cores - X3 435 and X3 425 at 2.7 GHz and 2.9 GHz respectively - are expected to give the Pentium Dual Core CPUs a hard time in the entry-level segment, sporting an extra core. With the release of the upcoming Athlon II CPUs in early September, AMD seem to have devised a strong hold on the entry-level market. Intel will surely have to respond with major price cuts. Also rumoured is a Core 2 Quad Q7500 in response, but that is only a rumour.
The real winners, as always, are the consumers.

Advanced Micro Devices announced during Hot Chips conference that its next-generation code-named Bulldozer microprocessors will feature simultaneous multi-threading technology (SMT) akin to Intel Corp.’s HyperThreading. AMD did not reveal many details about its SMT capability and only said that its Bulldozer processors would support it in 2011. Still, it is rather likely that AMD’s approach may be somewhat different compared to Intel’s HT and may even be of the same kind like Sun Microsystems’ simultaneous multi-threading feature than supports execution of four threads on one physical core.

Bulldozer is the next-generation micro-architecture and processor design developed from the ground up by AMD. In fact, Bulldozer will be the first major redesign of AMD’s processor architecture singe 2003, when the firm launched its Athlon 64/Opteron (K8) processors. It is expected that the next-generation micro-processors will offer considerably higher performance than current-generation chips. AMD Bulldozer CPUs will also feature SSE5 instruction set. The first desktop processor in the Bulldozer family is code-named Orochi and it has more than four cores, more than 8MB of cache and supports DDR3 memory. The Orochi chip will be made using 32nm process technology and is currently due in 2011. Server processors powered by Bulldozer micro-architecture are code-named Valencia and Interlagos. Those chips will have six to eight and twelve to sixteen processing engines.

ASUS listed a new AMD Socket AM3 motherboard on its website over the weekend called the M4A785TD-M EVO. This microATX model uses the upcoming AMD 785G chipset, SB710 southbridge, and ATI Radeon HD 4200 integrated graphics with DirectX 10.1 support. It has support for 1800MHz DDR3 memory and uses conductive polymer caps. You can check out the full specs at ASUS. This motherboard supports AMD Socket AM3 multi-core processors with unique L3 cache and delivers better overclocking capabilities with less power consumption. It features dual-channel DDR3 1333 memory support and accelerates data transfer rate up to 5200MT/s via HyperTransport 3.0 based system bus. This motherboard also supports AMD CPUs in the new 45nm manufacturing process.
The ASUS M4A785TD-M EVO hasn't been officially announced yet, but will likely be released later this summer.

The latest in AMD's almost deliberate series of processors that unlock into powerful / more capable processors is the Athlon II X4. Some of the earliest batches of these sub-$150 quad-core processors can be converted to more powerful Phenom II X4 chips using a simple trick. When unlocked, the chip will be equipped with 6 MB L3 cache. Supposed to have been based on the "Propus" core that physically lack a L3 cache, apparently early batches continue to use the "Deneb" core with L3 cache locked (using moist threads instead of a padlock). Currently there's no information as to which specific batches of Athlon II X4 620 and Athlon II X4 630 work. The trick works on some motherboards that support the Advanced Clock Calibration (ACC) feature. Simply set the ACC option in the BIOS setup to "Auto" from its default value of "Disabled", and you're done.

Phenom II X3 740

It's been a long time coming, but AMD is finally going to add to the tri-core line-up (which is nothing but Phenom II X4 with one core disabled). The new product in question is Phenom II X3 740 - running at 3.0 GHz, with a total of 1.5 MB L2 + 6MB L3 cache. No word yet on the power envelope, but it could well remain at 95W—AMD does sell a quad-core, 95W Phenom II with that same clock speed, after all.

AMD plans to transit from the current Dragon AM3 platform to Leo platform in April 2010. The new platform is made up of a slew of faster 45nm multi-core AM3 CPUs to be released next year coupled with the new AMD 890FX/GX + SB850 chipsets as well as the DX11 graphics cards; Helmlock and Cypress (Radeon HD 5800 series). The new chipsets gonna sport several key features like improved CrossFire performance, ATi Stream and OpenCL support, next gen. Hybrid CrossFire, enhanced overclocking through AMD Fusion II with OverDrive and Black Edition memory profiles. Other neat features include the support for SATA 6Gbps, USB 3.0, Integrated Broadcom MAC, FIS based switching.

Advanced Micro Devices is preparing a desktop processor with six processing engines. The new central processing units (CPUs) will not be available this year, but are likely to boost performance of AMD’s desktop platforms sometime in 2010. AMD’s processor code-named Thuban is the company’s first desktop processor with six processing engines. The microprocessors will be compatible with socket AM3 infrastructure and will have integrated dual-channel PC3-10600 (DDR3 1333MHz) memory controller. It is very likely that Thuban processors will retain AMD Phenom II brand name as well as design of the code-named Istanbul chips for servers, thus, will feature 3MB L2 cache (512KB per core) and 6MB of L3 cache. The chips will be made using 45nm SOI fabrication process.

Thuban is a star in the constellation of Draco and it also means “dragon” in Arabian language. The new six-core chip should be compatible with existing AM3 infrastructure (and, quite possibly, even with AM2+ infrastructure with split power plane), it remains to be seen whether Thuban becomes a part of AMD’s current high-end desktop platform called Dragon, or will power the company’s next-generation Leo platform.

AMD’s Leo platform will be based on the AMD 890FX and 890GX core-logic sets. The new chipsets will offer better performance and functionality, e.g., they will support Serial ATA-600, 14 Serial ATA 2.0 ports and so on, but both will only hit mass production in April, 2010, and will be formally released in May next year. Provided that AMD has its Thuban processors ready before May 2010, the company is likely to start shipping them as soon as possible so that to be able to compete for the high-end desktop segment. In fact, it is somewhat surprising that AMD will only be able to offer six-core desktop chip about a year after it started to ship six-core chips for servers. Nevertheless, based on currently available information, AMD Thuban is due only in Q3 2010.

At present AMD’s highest-performance six-core chips operate at 2.80GHz, meanwhile, the fastest quad-core CPUs function at 3.40GHz. With six physical cores AMD will be able to demonstrate rather high performance in multi-tasking and applications that need to execute numerous threads at once. Moreover, as future video games that rely on DirectX 11 start to arrive, the advantages provided by six-core Thuban and Istanbul processors will be even more apparent.

VR-Zone has put together a roadmap of the AMD 800 series chipsets line-up slated for release in Q2 next year. AMD 890FX/GX + SB850, part of the "Leo" platform for enthusiasts is slated for launch in April 2010 replacing the current AMD 790FX/GX + SB750 chipset. AMD 880G + SB810, part of the "Dorado" mainstream platform will come along in May 2010 replacing the current AMD 785G + SB710 chipset. AMD 880G comes with enhanced IGP graphics performance which we presume is DX11 capable and sports the next generation ATi Hybrid graphics technology. Overall, the AMD 880G board could be priced cheaper due to the integrated clock generator and integrated Broadcom MAC.

With virtual desktops becoming more commonplace, the need is growing to support richer graphic environments that have not been easily served by traditional server hosted clients methodologies. This proof of concept demo shows how direct device assignment for a graphics card could help support demanding graphics applications like computer aided design (CAD) and digital content creation (DCC). Please note that the upcoming AMD OpteronTM 6100 Series processors, code-named Magny-Cours referenced below, are scheduled to be launched in the first quarter of 2010.

The demo runs on an AMD engineering development system featuring two twelve-core AMD OpteronTM 6100 Series processors, an upcoming AMD SR5690 chipset and an ATi FireProTM professional graphics card. This system is executing 3DMark06 or “Toy Store”/”Code Zero” from within a virtual machine running on VMware ESX 4.0. The demo compares graphics performance with and without direct device mapping and utilizes AMD I/O virtualization technology for the graphics passthru. Support for AMD I/O virtualization technology is offered experimentally with VMware ESX 4.0.

The combination of black and yellow colors as well as black and silver looks very appealing. As for the actual components, their layout is close to classical, which is the most convenient anyway. Foxconn A7DA 3.0: AMD 790GX + SB750 AM3 pločaFoxconn is currently offering one more mainboard on AMD 790GX chipset and both these models use the same PCB layout. The top model Foxconn A7DA-S 3.0 is equipped with a different cooling system, has an additional IEEE1394 (FireWire) controller, Power On and Reset buttons in the right PCB corner.

As you understand, we were somewhat disappointed with the results of our overclocking experiments with Foxconn A7DA 3.0. The success of the mission was relative and only possible due to a Black Edition processor with an unlocked clock frequency multiplier that we had at our disposal, and not to the outstanding abilities of Foxconn A7DA 3.0 mainboard. This is an entry-level solution, but despite the absence of numerous additional controllers, its functionality is sufficient to satisfy the needs of a mainstream user.

The processors of AMD's Phenom II X2 series are some of the cheapest 45nm processors on the market and have proved themselves among overclockers. The new manufacturing process leaves plenty of margin for overclocking and we now hear that AMD will use this with a new flagship product, Athlon II X2 255. The processor will operate at 3.1GHz with 200MHz processor bus and 2MB L2 cache. The processor will be 100MHz faster than the current flagship Athlon II X2 250, but both are labeled 65W. The clock frequency aside specifications are identical to earlier models of the Athlon II X2 family and the price will be around $75-80, while AMD will lower the price of Athlon II X2 250. Athlon II X2 255 has not been launched yet, but the model has already appeared at motherboard manufacturers and their lists of supported processors.

Next on the roadmap is the Leo platform, as expected, headlined by the "Thuban" CPUs - which will be native a 6-core version of the current Phenom II X4 line, based on the Istanbul server CPU. Along with the Thuban CPUs, the RD890 chipset will release, presumably as AMD 890FX, tied to the SB850 southbridge. Graphics will be powered by ATI's HD 5000 DX11 series. On the Mainstream side of things - we will have the same Athlon II CPUs, with newer, faster models - with a new IGP motherboard - the RS880P. Unfortunately, rumours suggest the RS880P graphics core is based on the Radeon HD 4000 series and thus features only last-gen performance and DX10.1, rather than the DX11 we would have preferred. This platform will be called the "Dorado" platform. The 800 series chipsets seem to support only DDR3 RAM.

Moving in to 2011, we will finally see the next-gen architecture, Bulldozer, and the move to 32nm. The enthusiast platform is "Scorpius", based around the Zambezi CPU. We can expect Zambezi CPUs to be between 4 and 8 cores. Interestingly, the socket is mentioned as "AM3r2". If AMD can get it's next-gen CPUs working on AMD sockets with a BIOS upgrade, that will be a bonus, though unlikely, considering Bulldozer is considered to be the biggest revolution since K8. On the graphics side, we will have ATi's next-gen, which will release by the end of 2010. On the mainstream front, the Lynx platform finally sees the release of the long-anticipated and much delayed Fusion. The CPU to be launched first is of course the Llano APU. APU being a processor which combines a CPU and a GPU on a single piece of silicon.
