COLLAPSE: Intel is falling apart

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan is set to visit the White House on Monday after U.S. President Donald Trump called for his removal last week. Tan hopes to win Trump's approval by showing his commitment to the U.S. and guaranteeing the importance of keeping Intel's manufacturing capabilities as a national security issue. More importantly, with all the political and economic turmoil, the company is facing uncertainty about the future of its foundry division right now. The 18A process could get pushed into 2026, as the current yield rates make mass production unviable for the company.

Former Intel CEO and chairman Craig Barrett has laid out a blunt blueprint to rescue both Intel and, by extension, America’s ability to produce state-of-the-art chips. He has warned that without urgent funding, Intel risks ceding critical ground to overseas rivals, which is an unprecedented fate since the company is crucial to America's contemporary semiconductor ambitions. He stressed that leadership in chipmaking requires heavy investment years in advance of demand

Barrett argued that Intel remains the sole US company capable of matching Taiwan’s TSMC at the leading edge—but lacks the capital to scale and modernize its production. With government CHIPS Act funding insufficient to close the gap, he insists the only realistic source of cash is Intel’s own customers. He proposed that Intel’s eight largest customers, including Apple, Google, and nVidia, should each contribute $5 billion in return for guaranteed domestic supply and pricing leverage against Asian competitors.

Barrett said neither TSMC nor Samsung intends to bring their most advanced manufacturing to US soil, posing long-term risks for American technology companies dependent on imported chips. “The only place the cash can come from is the customers,” he wrote, adding that leadership in manufacturing requires proactive investment years ahead of market demand.

Psiholozi i psihijatri se već dulje vremena bave procesom tugovanja. U današnje vrijeme najčešće se spominje pet faza tugovanja koje je navela 1969. godine psihijatrica Elisabeth Kübler-Ross. Ove su faze temeljene na njezinom proučavanju osjećaja pacijenata na samrti, no kasnije ih je proširila na sve „vrste“ tugovanja i gubitaka. Prema njoj, proces tugovanja uključuje:

Poricanje – ovo se ne događa
Bijes – zašto se događa? Tko je kriv?
Pogodba/pregovaranje – učinit ću bilo što, samo da se ovo ne dogodi…
Depresija – prežalostan sam da bih bilo što učinio
Prihvaćanje – u miru sam s ovime što se događa

Sve bude OK, preCednik slobodnog svijeta (inače John Gotti LARPing entuzijast) i (još uvijek aktualni) Intel direktor su uspjeli nešto dogovoriti.

Jedino nema govora o tome da li je preCednik upoznat činjenicom da Intel koristi TSMC usluge za svoje čipove iz domaće proizvodnje.

Intel issued an official statement, saying that "Earlier today, Mr. Tan had the honor of meeting with President Trump for a candid and constructive discussion on Intel's commitment to strengthening U.S. technology and manufacturing leadership. We appreciate the President's strong leadership to advance these critical priorities and look forward to working closely with him and his Administration as we restore this great American company." What the company hopes is that under Mr. Tan, Intel can continue building on a fab legacy left by the previous CEO Pat Gelsinger, and that customers will start piling up for the 18A and 14A nodes.

While the 18A node showed little interest for external customers, Intel plans to use it extensively across its product lines. For 14A, Intel has decided to switch its approach and evaluate if customers want to utilize it first, then build more 14A capacity. If no customers show up, low demand will naturally hinder the development of leading-edge nodes at Intel Foundry. So we have to wait and see what kind of actions now follow from the fact that Intel is now in the spotlight of national interest due to the Trump administration. Perhaps in the future Intel will continue leading-edge node development unconditionally, and we will see much deeper connections to U.S. companies. There are already reports of companies like Apple and nVidia evaluating Intel 14A node, so the Foundry could finally catch some momentum.
