PCGames.de: Counter-Strike: Global Offensive was just announced… you’re not calling it Counter-Strike 2, or 3 or 4, why is that?

Newell: Because it’s not Counter-Strike 2. Dota 2 is a clear sequel, it’s a big step forward; CS:GO has two real goals. One is to give a significant update to the PC players who have been playing CS 1.6 or CS: Source, and also importantly, since we haven’t done a Counter-Strike for the consoles since 2003 when we did an Xbox version, it’s to give the new generation of console players a way to play Counter-Strike. But Counter-Strike 2 is gonna have to have a lot more to it to really deserve to be called that. It’s a great product, but it’s not a CS2.

PCGames.de: And what are those improvements you’ve just mentioned?

Newell: It’ll be similar to the kind of updates we saw between CS 1.6 and CS: Source. There are new maps, everything has been upgraded, we’re bringing it into the present in terms of engine technology and graphics technology. We’re taking some of the features that we’ve implemented in Team Fortress 2 and some of the functionality that we’re developing for Dota 2 and merging that back in to the Counter-Strike codebase. So it’s freshening everything up and giving it a good coat of paint.

PCGames.de: Now, since you are also developing for the Xbox 360 and the PS3, do you have to tune the game down in terms of skill and difficulty? Or is it basically the same game on all platforms?

Newell: Nobody wants a compromise or de-featured multiplayer experience. That’s just not a good strategy. People want to play the real game, not a dumbed-down version of it.

PCGames.de: There’s been a rumor that you will have infinite ammunition in the game. Is that true?

Newell: I’m not going to say anything about the infinite ammunition issue.

PCGames.de: With Portal 2, you introduced cross-platform gaming between the PC and the PS3 – is that an option for CS:GO?

Newell: It’s certainly our goal. We never want to create these islands of players. You have to be sensitive to control differences and make sure you are accommodating that, but our view is that players should be able to play as part of a community on whatever device they can. Sometimes there are contractual or other issues that make that hard, where a platform holder doesn’t want you to do that for whatever reason, but that’s always our preference, to let customers play and be part of the larger community.
