Downturn in the PC sector: Intel is said to be planning to cut thousands of jobs
Citiraj:
According to OregonLive/The Oregonian, a local newspaper in the Portland area, one of Intel's largest locations, up to 20 percent of sales and marketing staff could be laid off. Around a fifth of the current 114,000 employees at Intel are based around Hillsboro. However, this decision would not come as a surprise, even though Intel is still quiet before the quarterly report in the week after next. But after the first signs of a slowdown in the PC market, it was already said in the summer that Intel had imposed a hiring freeze for certain areas of the company. Such a measure is the first step before job cuts occur.

It is currently unclear how socially acceptable this will be implemented. The last major wave of layoffs at Intel was in 2015 and 2016, when a total of almost 13,000 jobs were cut, and some of the procedures from that time are still ongoing today. Because at the time, a large number of older employees were laid off. A reduction in jobs in the current phase would also be anything but good publicity for Intel. Almost every week, the company advertises with the busy CEO Pat Gelsinger for more money from the state in order to be able to expand its own production - the most important reason is always the strengthening of the chip market in Europe and the USA. The company is undoubtedly concerned with strengthening itself, because its own foundry business should at best become a small alternative to TSMC in the future.
