"A few hours ago Arturo Blas Jiménez finished the very first experimental build of Octane 2019.1.
This build uses a Vulkan backend on RTX hardware, compiled with the RNDR SDK we showed in March for the 2019 roadmap.
While this build is actually a mix of Vulkan and CUDA10 (we’re a ways off from going 100% VK/Metal), it’s already showing waaay faster performance on RT Cores (in the first scene we tested below) than anything we tried before.
On our current CUDA backend, a 1080 is about 130 OB (top image), and a 2080 is about 207 OB (bottom left).
The bottom right image is the same 2080 with the new Vulkan backend+RTX turned on:
GTX 1080 (CUDA) - 34 seconds
RTX 2080 (CUDA) - 22 seconds
RTX 2080 (Vulkan+RTX on) - 11 seconds
Ray tracing hardware is the future.
(Update - just tested on 2080 Ti, and it’s same scaling as above, and 30% faster than 2080 on both cuda and VK+RTX)
