SK hynix is buying Intel’s NAND fab and SSD business
Citiraj:
SK hynix is paying $9bn to buy Intel’s NAND foundry and SSD business. The possibility of the deal became public on October 29 and the deal became actual today. Korean SK hynix is paying 208 trillion won (about $9bn) for the bulk of Intel’s Non-Volatile Solutions Group (NSG), meaning the Dalian fab, the NAND wafer and components operations, NAND IP and staff, and the SSD business, leaving the group with its 3D Point operations. For Intel, this transaction will allow us to further prioritize our investments in differentiated technology where we can play a bigger role in the success of our customers and deliver attractive returns to our stockholders. Those attractive returns have been lacking from Intel’s NAND business. Intel is walking away from a failed business that couldn’t deliver the ROI it wanted. For Intel itself, getting $9B will help offset the 10nm challenges that the company has faced in other parts of its portfolio. Between having to do a different type of silicon manufacturing and operating in a more commoditized business than it typically does, it may have been an attractive piece to sell for Intel.
TSMC sets the stage for a great 2021
Citiraj:
TSMC started EUV with a mature 7nm node then went full EUV at 5nm. Intel on the other hand is expected to go from zero EUV at 10nm to full EUV at 7nm.
