AMD EPYC 7002 Series Rome delivers a Knockout
Citiraj:
AMD is now engaged in an asymmetric attack against the legacy Intel Xeon architectures. Intel has a competitive response in its 2020 “Ice Lake” generation, but its 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable chips released just four months ago are not competitive in many markets. This is all due to the 10nm process delays which pushed next-generation Intel Ice Lake out and therefore has the AMD EPYC 7002 competing against a legacy Xeon architecture. The world has certainly changed. AMD EPYC 7002 “Rome” now brings a better chiplet design. Intel is also not saying AMD “glued” together parts anymore. Instead, Intel is trying to catch up with the Intel Xeon Platinum 9200/ Cascade Lake-AP family gluing two pieces of silicon together and losing some functionality. Intel is also aggressively marketing its packaging technology advantages.
Citiraj:
On the AMD EPYC 7702P side, AMD is calling Intel that if it wants to be performance competitive, it needs to discount two Platinum 8280M’s by 83% plus the incremental cost of a dual-socket server versus a single-socket server.
This is a big deal.

Citiraj:
AMD specifically asked us not to use power consumption from the 2P test server with pre-production fan control firmware we used for our testing. We are also not allowed to name because Intel put pressure on the OEM who built it to have AMD not disclose this information, despite said OEM having their logo emblazoned all over the system. Yes, Intel is going to that level of competitive pressure on its industry partners ahead of AMD’s launch. In every dual-socket test, we are seeing the AMD EPYC 7742 out-perform the dual Intel Xeon Platinum 8280 configuration sometimes by ~2x, and yet the maximum power is lower.
