AMD beats Q2 earnings with revenue of $6.55B, up 70%
Citiraj:
The results were better than what rival Intel reported. In the past couple of years, Intel has also stumbled on both the chip design side and in manufacturing, where it has lost its technological advantage to rivals such as TSMC, which makes both processors and graphics chips for AMD. As a result, AMD has been making historic market share gains for the past three years. What’s interesting is AMD has been making these gains amid a historic chip shortage driven by the supply whipsaw from the pandemic and unprecedented demand for electronic goods.

The revenue was a new record for AMD in a second quarter, and it came courtesy of growth in all there of the company's operating segments which target the personal computing, data center computing and gaming and custom devices. For the outlook, AMD expects Q3 2022 revenue to hit $6.7 billion, plus or minus $200 million, up 55% from a year ago thanks to growth in the datacenter and embedded segments. For the full year, AMD estimates revenue will be $26.3 billion, up 60% from a year earlier, and gross margins of 54%. In contrast to Intel's big miss last week, AMD actually delivered a solid quarter, solidifying its spot as an increasingly prominent player within both the high-performance PC and data center CPU market.
AMD CEO Lisa Su announced that the company's 5nm Ryzen 7000 processors, the first Zen 4 models to come to market, will arrive later this quarter. Su also announced that the company will launch its high-end RDNA 3 GPU later this year. Finally, AMD also confirmed that its Genoa server chips are on track to ramp up this year. In contrast, AMD seems to be firing on all cylinders as it prepares to launch its Ryzen 7000 CPUs, RDNA 3 GPUs, and EPYC Genoa data center processors on schedule.
