Poslao sam upit Seagateu vezan za taj zvuk, pa evo mog pitanja i odgovora koji mi je upravo stigao.
Moj upit:

A week ago i bought your internal SATA HDD (Barracuda 320GB, ST3320620ST, firmware 3.AAK) and from time to time i hear short irritating sound from it. It's like short small knocking, or a small punch to a plate or a sheer metal. I hear it, let say, a few times a day on irregular intervals. Some of the owners of the same or similar models also experience this sound in their drives, but some of them don't.
I've tested it with SeaTools and everything went fine. Also, it's overall performance is normal, on both Windows Vista and Debian Linux.
So, is this sound normal or should i take it back to my retailer?

Thank you for your E-mail inquiry.
We apologize for the delay in responding to your E-mail.
With regards to your query, I would be glad to assist you.
The latest generation of our high-capacity hard drives has been programmed to perform regular offline scans to test the drive’s reliability and detect any possible malfunctions that may have been caused during transit.
The offline scanning takes place when the drive is idle. This feature cannot be disabled and does not affect the performance of the hard drive.
Offline scanning helps to maintain the reliability of the drive by moving the heads within the "high-flight zone" in a pre-programmed pattern. The "high-flight zone" is located toward the outside of the platters where the most air flows under the heads during times of inactivity.
If you feel that your noise is excessive , you can run Seagate's SeaTools diagnostic software to check the physical integrity of the drive.
SeaTools can be obtained from Seagate's website at: (http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/)
If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us or email us and we would be glad to assist you further.

Znači, po njima je to očigledno normalno. Iako piše da se ti scanovi odvijaju kad je disk idle, to baš i nije uvijek slučaj....
