Bambu Lab removes third-party app support for P and A series 3D printers
Citiraj:
An update to Bambu Lab’s A- and P-Series 3D printers earlier this week brought the controversial “Authorization Control” or “Security” update to the company’s budget machines, along with “Developer Mode” – a compromise the company promised amid backlash. After P-Series firmware version 01.08.02.00 and A-Series 01.05.00.00, the machines will now refuse communication from unofficial software. This includes software Bambu Lab previously worked closely with, like Orca Slicer. Instead, third-party software will need to use “Bambu Connect”, a middleware application, or set their devices to “Developer Mode” to bypass communication restrictions. Notably, Orca Slicer developer SoftFever declined to integrate Bambu Connect into the slicer, remarking it “would not provide meaningful value for Orca Slicer users.” Bambu Lab notes in the firmware release notes that downgrading the firmware to a previous version remains possible.
In effect, this prevents users from using third-party applications on their machines by default. Thankfully, there are a few ways around this that will still allow you to make the most of your 3D printing workflow using your favorite apps and add-ons. One way is to avoid the update altogether, however this means your printer will be unsupported going forward unless you choose to update it. The other option is to take advantage of Developer Mode, which gives you the authorization to install third party apps. Some features found in third party apps can be found in the Bambu Connect software, like the ability to view your print remotely. However, many users are partial to programs like Octoprint that have their own add-ons. Bambu Labs' decision isn't entirely a surprise as it added the same restriction earlier this year to the X series 3D printers.
