CPU king Intel faces rocky road to achieve GPU dreams + Intel – everyone’s favourite second source?
Citiraj:
Intel’s Falcon Shores GPU may (not) meet expectations; Gaudi chips are a weak AI entry product; Interim co-CEO is still learning the Xeon product line. These were some of the grim learnings from a data-center product roadmap update provided last week by Intel following Pat Gelsinger’s retirement. Intel’s interim co-CEOs Michelle Holthaus and Dave Zinsner believe that GPUs are the processors of the future, with AI still in its infancy. This view differs from Gelsinger’s position, which just a few months ago doubled down on CPUs. Intel has just three guaranteed products on its data center and AI roadmap, including two Xeon chips – Diamond Rapids and Clearwater Forest – and one GPU, Falcon Shores. Holthaus admitted that AMD is doing a better job of servicing customers. She said Intel would take its time to invest in technology to create products customers want.
Holthaus admitted that Intel needed a general-purpose GPU for long-term competitiveness in the AI market, which was just getting started. Holthaus said computing had shifted from CPUs to GPUs, where Intel was absent. That’s another reason why Intel needed to release Falcon Shores, primarily to establish a presence in the GPU market. This shift represents a U-turn from Gelsinger’s recent emphasis on x86 CPUs, which could give Intel a place in the nVidia ecosystem. Holthaus disagrees with Gelsinger and believes GPUs are the future, and Intel should have a product in this space. Holthaus acknowledged weakness in the Xeon chip market as AMD was servicing customers better. She said her job was to win back customers. Her initial task will be to learn about Xeons, the market, and the pivots and changes the company needs to make.
Intel’s Granite Rapids was expected to change the company’s fortunes in servers but is now putting its faith in Diamond Rapids. Holthaus, also CEO of Intel Products, has a sales background, and Zinsner is the Chief Financial Officer. The call made one thing obvious: there’s a lack of engineering leadership at the top level. Previous CEOs, including Intel’s Paul Otellini, came from marketing, and Bob Swan was a financial executive. There’s no engineering focus. These conflicting statements may confuse customers looking for package deals of CPUs and GPUs to build AI installations. The CPU+GPU package has proven successful for AMD and nVidia.
Intel has gone back to being a PC- and manufacturing-first company, with data centers and AI somewhere in the background. Intel is more competitive in PCs, with good products ready to go. Previously, Gelsinger committed to producing data center chips in Intel’s factories. Clearwater Forest will be made on the 18A node. However, Intel is willing to use TSMC for data center chips. The interim co-CEOs said the data center focus is to build good products for customers. Intel repeats this message every time a new CEO arrives and predictably fails. The short-sighted approach has hurt Intel repeatedly.
