Intel disables Power Gate “DLVR bypass” mode on Arrow Lake CPUs, overclockers dissapointed
Citiraj:
Intel uses the DLVR to supply each individual performance core and each individual efficiency core cluster with its own voltage. This makes the design particularly efficient at low and medium loads, as the same voltage is not present across all cores, some of which are used and some are not. The DLVR can also show its strengths in games. However, the DLVR also has disadvantages under full load. It must reduce the input voltage to the respective voltage of the cores and clusters at a given current that is necessary to "operate" the cores. Therefore, there is a certain power loss that occurs in the processor and has nothing to do with the actual computing power. Based on the 250 W of a Core Ultra 9 285K, this is around 80 to 90 W of pure power loss on the DLVR.
The power loss in games and therefore also in partial loads is significantly lower than under full load. However, under full load it can make sense to bypass the DLVR, as the power loss is included in the overall budget and, in case of doubt, slows down the cores. However, the total power consumption of the system increases in this case because the voltage regulation on the mainboard is also subject to a certain amount of power loss and must be added to the power loss of the processor. Bypassing the DVLR has so far been quite easy in the BIOS. There was a corresponding BIOS option, also called Power Gate Mode. In the past few days, BIOS updates have been distributed for motherboards with the Z890 chipset and these also contained microcode 0x112. This microcode is also intended to remove the DLVR bypass.
In practical terms, this means: Accidental "misuse" should be prevented and Intel wants to ensure that the bypass of the DVLR is only enabled in Extreme OC scenarios. The default settings on all mainboards do not provide for a workaround. In this respect, we do not fully understand how abuse can take place here. The DLVR bypass could make sense for certain areas of application, but Intel should leave this decision to the user.
