Zen 4c "Bergamo": AMD's 16-core CCD requires only 9.6% more area than 8 cores
Citiraj:
AMD squeezes 16 cores with the exact same caches into the format that was previously available for 8 cores. The only thing that doesn't grow with it is the L3 cache, which stays at 32 MB in the CCD - it's effectively halved here per core. However, since AMD packs 33 percent more cores onto the processor in the end, the L3 cache only drops from 384 MB with Genoa with 96 cores to 256 MB L3 cache with Bergamo and 128 cores. The fact that the 16 cores and 32 MB L3 cache in Bergamo only occupy 72.7 mm² is extremely surprising, since AMD already specified 66.3 mm² of space for eight cores and 32 MB L3 cache. And this is realized in the same N5 manufacturing, where equal is not the same. Because there are a few refinements that make this possible in the first place. But also a waiver here and there, for example the TSVs, which were always included for a stacked L3 cache in the previous Zen 4 design. That will not happen at Bergamo, but conversely it frees up space.
