Conclusion
144 Hz IPS monitors for around 200 euros? It seemed too good to be true when we heard about this in April this year, but the AOC 24G2U and 27G2U largely deliver on their promise.
They combine ample response times - better than any of the other VA and IPS-based screens we tested, as well as better than the necessary TN panels - with a wide color gamut with saturated, rich colors and excellent uniformity.
In terms of functionality, there is very little to complain about - in addition to any desirable connection and fully adjustable suspension, there is both freesync and g-sync compatibility. If desired, the scalers offer an alternative in the form of an anti-motion blur facility, in addition to the necessary features that you can expect on a gaming screen. What you should not expect, but is very welcome, is the excellently calibrated sRGB preset - which makes the screens great for photo editing in that color space.
There are a few things to keep in mind, especially with the 24-inch version. This has an annoyingly high minimum brightness, so we don't recommend it for use in the dark - the almost 90 nits we measure are too bright for pleasant use. The 27-inch version can significantly dim further. In addition, the viewing angles of the 24G2U are really below par. No problem if you are sitting right in front of it, but not what you think of with the indication 'ips'. With the 27-incher, the viewing angles are less bad, but still below average.
Nevertheless, both the 24G2U and the 27G2U are highly recommended for those looking for an affordable gaming screen. Although the combination of the full HD resolution and the larger diagonal is not ideal in terms of sharpness, the 27-inch version offers the best experience in our opinion: the negatives are less disturbing and the larger size is nice for gaming. In addition, the additional cost compared to the 24-inch variant is relatively low. That is why we reward the 27G2U with an Excellent Choice award; the 24G2U receives Great Value, because even with the mentioned negatives, the price-performance ratio is particularly good.
