Članak: Why do cars no longer need to be broken in?

1. Break-in to remove contaminants. In the "old days" (mid 1980's or earlier), engine tolerances were much lower than they are today. Because there was a relatively large amount of "give" between components, it wasn't necessary to ensure all internal engine components were perfectly clean before assembly. Automakers would try to remove all the "gunk" found in a new engine (like machine filings, assembly lube, etc) before assembly, but they rarely did a perfect job.

Since the tolerances were so loose (relatively speaking), this gunk didn't cause any problems. However, it was a very good idea to change the oil after 500-1,000 miles so that you could remove whatever contaminants the oil had collected.

Today, engines are assembled using a painstaking process that is almost perfectly clean - there are no contaminants allowed, as a single machine filing could damage new, low-tolerance motors. SO, it's no longer necessary to worry about removing contaminants from oil, as a brand-new motor will not have any contaminants.
