I get that gameplay footage of mechanics may not be available. I'm okay with that. I don't think it's legit that we don't even have updated documentation on the core elements of the game, which should be pretty well hashed out by now.
CIG has now done concept sales for over half a dozen exploration ships. We know next to nothing about how exploration works aside from "Fly somewhere, scan something." What makes the 315P different from a Reliant SEN or a Terrapin, practically speaking? We don't know. Yes, some people will say "Oh, the SEN is more for science." Well, that's nice, except we have no idea how the hell "science" is going to work, or what the practical difference actually is.
CIG keeps showing off ancillary features of the game. Planet gen is really cool, and I'm totally hyped for it, but I don't care how dynamic the planets are if there's no game underneath them. Same thing with ships: Showing off concepts and ship progress is great, but without the jobs most ships are supposed to be able to do fleshed out, it's not much more than showing off neat art assets.
Furthermore, the lack of any up-to-date or in-depth material leads to rampant speculation by the community. If you had an hour long talk with 100 people in the Star Citizen community about what they think the PU will be, you'd probably end up with descriptions for 80 different games at this point. There's little to base expectations on, and CIG has not put much effort into checking the unfounded hopes of the community. It's not really their job to do so, but it is their job to provide a good base to build off of, and ultimately they're the ones that get hurt when people end up with a game that isn't what they imagined it would be.
