Citiraj:
...Now, you can't have both stocks doing well on AMD's news. One of them needs to be punished. The reason is simple: Servers. AMD controls less than 1% of the x86 server market, and Intel controls the rest of it. So here, if AMD is able to deliver a competitive server CPU (never mind what gains it could get on the desktop), any additional revenue by AMD would come directly from Intel. Moreover, getting a competitive foothold in the server market would mean not just taking away revenues and profits directly from Intel, but it would also represent competitive pressure which would likely lower prices and margins even for the share Intel would keep.
In short, this is a binary outcome here when it comes to servers either AMD does badly or Intel does badly (more of an "exclusive or" - XOR, but never mind). Both can't do well. Servers (as in Intel's "Data Center Group") are as important for Intel's earnings as desktops ("Client Computing Group"). Obviously, if AMD launches a competitive CPU, Intel's business would also suffer when it came to desktop/laptop CPU sales, pricing and margins. But nowhere are things so obvious as with servers, given the fact that AMD is basically non-existent in that market anymore.
Indeed, Intel's "Data Center Group" margins are higher because of this lack of competition. While the "Client Computing Group" represents 55% of Intel's H1 2016 revenues, it represents just around 50% of its gross operating income, which is more or less the same as the "Data Center Group" in spite of this segment representing just 29% of sales. Any competition in servers is going to have an outsized impact on Intel.
