After reading the article all i did was
1. open REGEDIT
2. goto HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers.
3. Add following DWORD "TdrLevel"
4. Set the value to "0"
This disables TDR. I dont see a downside in doing this. SO far my system is working fine. I hope both windows and Ati come up with some solution which doesnot require playing with registry

So I uninstalled everything, did a clean re-install of card, left the onboard drivers that windows automatically installed in, and it doesn't freeze anymore and my display driver doesnt stop responding.
The problem is that there's no way to adjust graphics setting except for In-game as the windows "generic" 3800 drivers apparently don't have the Catalyst Control Manager.
