Following AT&T’s announcement this morning, Apple has confirmed two million preorders in 24 hours. That more than doubles the preorder record of approximately one million units held by the iPhone 4S. Apple also noted that demand is exceeding its initial supply and that some preorder customers will not receive their device until October. For those doing the math, that’s 83,333 units/hour, 1388/minute, or 23/second over the first day.

According to Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller, “iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal… iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we’ve ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do.”
