Sony plans to restart a lithium-ion battery plant that it closed following the devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan earlier this month, Reuters is reporting.

Operations have stopped in the Shin-Etsu Chemical Company's Shirakawa facility, where it makes 300mm wafers most commonly used in flash and DRAM memory, while MEMC Electronic Materials said its Utsonomiya plant had stopped manufacturing.
Together, the two facilities account for 25 per cent of the global supply of silicon wafer used to make semiconductors, according to iSuppli, which warned that worldwide semiconductor production could be seriously hit as a result.

Although the effects of the quake on Japan's tech manufacturing industry are still unclear, major display panel makers such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are facing shortages from component suppliers due to blackouts and transport issues. Sebastian Ho, an analyst with Yuanta Investment Consulting in Taipei, told IDG News service that shortages could result in higher prices for panel buyers, resulting in more expensive products for consumers.
