On September 28, 2010, some members of the OpenOffice.org Project formed a new group called The Document Foundation, and made available a rebranded fork of OpenOffice.org which was based on OpenOffice.org 3.3 beta version. The fork was created over fears that Oracle Corporation, after buying out the project's former sponsor, Sun Microsystems, would discontinue OpenOffice.org as they had done with OpenSolaris. It was hoped that the LibreOffice name would be provisional, as Oracle was invited to become a member of the Document Foundation, and was asked to donate the OpenOffice.org brand to the project; therefore, LibreOffice uses the same version number as OpenOffice.org.[2] Oracle rejected the project and demanded that all members of the OpenOffice.org board involved with it step down. At the end of October 2010, 33 German volunteers, not involved with development, left OpenOffice.org and moved to The Document Foundation to support LibreOffice.[3][4][5]
The Go-oo project was discontinued in favour of LibreOffice.[6] Improvements made by the project are being merged into LibreOffice. Improvements made in other forks are expected to be incorporated into LibreOffice as well.[7][8]
Canonical, Novell and Red Hat plan to include LibreOffice in upcoming versions of their operating systems.[4] On 20 January 2011, the Ubuntu 11.04 daily builds changed the office suite to LibreOffice for alpha testing purposes.[9][10]
In developing their first release The Document Foundation developers made LibreOffice 3.3.0 beta 1 available on September 28, 2010 with beta 2 following on October 14. Beta 3 was released on November 17, 2010, with the first release candidate on December 5, the second just before Christmas, on December 23, 2010[11], third release candidate on January 13, 2011[12] and the fourth on January 20, 2011.[13] The first stable version was released on January 25, 2011.[14]
Pardus became the first Linux distribution to include LibreOffice as the default office suite with its January 20, 2011 major release.[15]
In reviewing LibreOffice 3.3.0 stable on the day of its release Ryan Paul of Ars Technica said, "It introduces a number of noteworthy new features and there are improvements throughout the included applications. More significantly, the release reflects the growing strength of the nascent LibreOffice project...The new features included in LibreOffice 3.3 improve the office suite's feature set, usability, and interoperability with other formats. For example, it has improved support for importing documents from Lotus Word Pro and Microsoft Works. Another key new feature is the ability to import SVG content and edit SVG images in LibreOffice Draw."[16]
