Clarification for console gamers confused at the outrage
Thu Oct 22, 2009 12:57 pm
Ever since news sprang regarding the lack of support for mods, elimination of dedicated servers, and price DLC, the PC gaming community has been in quite an uproar. As a result, there have been many of those who ventured in from the console forums to find out exactly what is going on or to simply troll and provoke PC gamers who are already outraged. However, there seems to be a severe lack of understanding by the console gamers of exactly why PC gamers are so upset at IW's decisions regarding the PC version of MW2. I will try to explain as clearly as I can, so that the console gamers who genuinely want to know why we are so mad can have a better insight.
1. Dedicated Servers - Dedicated servers are servers purchased, maintained, and monitored by individuals or clans to provide a low ping, high performance, and permanent host for a specific game, hence the term dedicated. While dedicated servers are usually first and foremost a host for clan members or the individual's friends, it also serves as a playground for other PC gamers as well. It would actually be more precise to consider a dedicated server as a club where you can visit, play with other fellow PC gamers consistently, and make friends. Dedicated servers also enjoy the advantage of being monitored by selected clan members (server admins) who are able to ban cheaters much faster than anti-cheat programs such as Punk Buster or VAC. Console players have not needed to deal with dedicated servers for a coupole of reasons. First of all, until recent history, consoles didn't even require online access; everything was localized. Secondly, consoles are ultimately dumbed down computers so it is designed to be simple and there matchmaking was born. Ironically, the CEO of IW compared their matchmaking system to L4D. What they fail to realize is that while L4D does use matchmaking, they are still using dedicated servers as well. Also the entire premise of L4D gameplay is to stick complete strangers together in order to replicate the realness of the four game characters thrown together during a zombie apocolypse.
2. Modified Content - A lot of well known games that many of us enjoy both on PC and consoles actually orignate from modified content. This includes maps, skins, and gameplay. Lets take Counter-Strike for instance. Counter-Strike was originally a mod from the Half-Life game and became so popular that Valve purchased it and turned it into an actual game. Modified content is great for the gaming community as well as developers because it not only prolongs the playability of a game, but explores the possibilities and creativity that the game or future games can achieve. Modified content brings variety to games as well as ideas to be used for other games as well. Ironically, when IW alluded to L4D as their justification for their actions, they failed to understand that L4D started out originally as a mod as well.
3. Priced Downloadable Content (DLC) - Despite what console gamers may feel, PC gamers have no problem paying for DLC as long as it is worth it. To be perfectly clear however, DLC is a relatively new term coined by MS for additional content they provide for games. Long before they were known as DLC, PC gamers got DLC in the form of modified content updates and expansion packs such as Starcraft Brood Wars or the crapload of Sims expansion packs. Here is the thing about priced DLC; it applies really more for consoles because developers have to pay for distribution licenses from MS and Sony to distribute them through either XBL or PSN. On the PC platform, there is no such thing as distribution licenses; all one has to do is host it and let the gamers download it. Also, because the PC community have always been creating our own maps, skins, gameplay adjustments, and other modified content, there is usually not a charge for the DLC's created as they are part of the community and therefore part of a commonwealth. If there is a charge, it is usually very little in order to compensate for the distribution or hosting of the content.
4. Competitive Play - I see a lot of comments of "It's only a game!" but what a lot of console gamers and even some PC gamers fail to understand, is that for some people this is literally a way of life where the level of performance in tournaments determine whether or not the player or clan will receive sponsorships or monetary prizes. In some countries, gaming is even a recognized and legitmate occupation. On that level, there is no difference between a professional athlete and a professional gamer.
5. Steam - Steam is a PC distribution center where games are tied to a specific user account, allowing customer to download the game from any computer without the need of a CD or serial key. While there are many pros and cons for this type of distribution, what has some members of the PC community annoyed is the fact that you cannot resell a game that is tied to a Steam account.
The sad truth is, no matter how IW wants to spin it, the decisions that IW have made are not beneficial for the PC platform. This is merely an attempt by IW to reign in complete command of all aspects of MW2 in order to profit from it. By tying MW2 to Steam and IWnet, IW/Activision has seized full control of all aspects of the game. They are now in charge of who gets to host MW2, what content is released for it, and ultimately how or if you can resell it once you tire of the game. All of this translates not for the better good of the gaming community, but ultimately the bottom line for Activision and IW. In fact, if you take a look at recent comments by Activision's CEO, you will see how this is in line with Activision's business plan. Remember that game Guitar Hero that you play on XBox? Activison is actually trying to remove it from the console platform as well and implement it directly into the accessories so he can price gouge console gamers even futher. As a longtime fan and supporter of the COD franchise, I am extremely sad to see IW implement these business practices. Now matter how much gold they try to sprinkle on what is essentially a pile of BS, all of these decisions do not benefit anyone but IW and Activision and ultimately only serves to alienate the PC community.
