The 580X chipset was originally named as "ATi Radeon Xpress 3200 chipset". The Radeon Xpress chipset was designed by ATi to enter the realm of the desktop arena, especially the AMD Socket 939 platform where ATi's rival, nVidia, had a clear market advantage. The Xpress 200 was launched with the CrossFire edition of the chipset considered as the high end of the chipset. Reviews painted the Xpress 200 Crossfire as a board that could match nVidia's nForce 4 SLi. With the release of the nForce 4 16x SLI, ATi changed strategy and announced the RD580 chipset.

The RD580 was called the "Radeon Xpress 3200" and was released on March 1, 2006. Supposedly, the chipset is also configured for the new Socket AM2 and of such, many motherboard manufacturers have decided to skip the Socket 939 RD580 and began reaearch and development (R&D) on the Socket AM2 version of RD580.

AMD 690G

The AMD 690 chipset series or AMD 690 series chipset by AMD is a chipset family manufactured by AMD subsidiary ATi for the AMD platform, focusing on both desktop and mobile computing markets. The 690 chipset series consists of three members: 690G, 690V and M690T. For 690G, the IGP was named as "Radeon X1250" operating at 400MHz IGP clock frequency, with HDMI and dual link DVI-D output with HDCP support and TDMS support for HDMI output. The chipset also support dual VGA and DVI or DVI and HDMI output simultaneously, to achieve a maximum of three monitor output, called "SurroundView", and up to four independent displays with an additional video card. The 690G chipset also support a maximum of 24 additional PCI Express lanes and a PCI Express x16 lanes expansion slot, and the chipset mixed audio and video signals and output through the HDMI interface.
