The delay of Advanced Micro Devices' highly-anticipated FX-series microprocessors by almost three months has clearly impacted not only AMD's plans and roadmap, but also the specs of the code-named Zambezi central processing units (CPUs). Based on the latest unofficial information, AMD tailored specifications of the upcoming chips so to clearly outperform competing offerings. A new list of AMD FX "Zambezi" specifications on a slide that looks similar to those from AMD roadmaps has been published by Donanim Haber web-site. Presumable specifications imply that AMD FX B2 stepping can indeed achieve higher clock-speeds than previously available B0 and B1 with 95W or 125W thermal design power. Among other things, AMD also tweaked the Turbo Core 2.0 technology and now the "boosters" can lift base frequency by either 200MHz, 600MHz or even 900MHz depending on the model.

Previously it was believed that AMD's Turbo Core 2.0 technology of Bulldozer chips can increase clock-speed by [up to] 500MHz [depending on the workload] for all eight, six or four cores and by [up to] 1000MHz when only half of the cores are used. If the new specifications are correct, them AMD decided to vary "boosted" frequency depending on the model. Although the variable clock-speed boost clearly makes CPU binning process more complex, it allows AMD to offer better performance where it is needed most and maximize the yield rate for the lower-end parts.

While AMD's Scorpius 2011 platform is yet to release fully, it will be succeeded by the Corona platform in 2012. This features the Komodo CPU, featuring up to 10 Piledriver CPU cores and Turbo 3.0. Unfortunately, Komodo will fit into a new CPU socket, with FM2 succeeding AM3+. Hudson D4 FCH, contains an upgraded southbridge with native USB 3.0 support. The northbridge is likely to be integrated into the CPU. The Corona platform will be completed by next-gen AMD GPUs, rumoured to be branded Radeon HD 7000 series. In the Fusion area, Lynx 2011 will be replaced by Virgo in 2012. The Trinity APU will not feature Bulldozer cores, but up to 4 next-gen Piledriver CPU cores and Turbo 3.0, improving Lynx's biggest weakness - CPU performance. The GPU part will continue to feature a DX11 GPU, though rumours state a VLIW-4 GPU will replace the current VLIW-5 GPU used in today's A-Series.

Interestingly, Trinity will fit into an FM2 socket - same as Komodo - but the FCH will continue to be A75 or A55, same as Lynx. The compatibility between FM1 and FM2 remains to be seen. Finally, Brazos will be replaced by Deccan, featuring Wichita APUs with upto 4 Bobcat cores and a FT2 infrastructure. The A45 FCH will be replaced by a FCH codenamed Yuba. AMD's major focus with 2012 seems to be bringing parity to it's mainstream and enthusiast platforms. Currently, A-Series and FX-Series seem worlds apart, with different CPU architectures and different sockets. In 2012, both FX-Series and A-Series (their successors) will feature CPU cores based on the same architecture - Piledriver - and they will fit into the same infrastructure - FM2. Of course, 2012 is still far away, and indeed "2012" is open to interpretation, and many things can change.

Advanced Micro Devices has officially confirmed approximate retail pricing of its high-end FX-series central processing unit with eight cores code-named Zambezi.
As expected, the chips will cost around $300, which is in line with the price of higher-end Intel Corp.'s Core i-series "Sandy Bridge" microprocessors.

Pre-order prices of AMD FX-Series CPUs

AMD FX-8120 and FX-8150 CPUs are 8-core models with 8 MB L2 and 8 MB L3 cache. The processors operate at 3.1 and 3.6 GHz, and listed at $222 and $266 respectively. These prices should drop by $10 - $20 once the chips are released. Considering that AMD official prices in 1K quantities are usually $10 - $15 lower than the prices of production chips in this store, we can expect that official prices will be in the range $185 - $200 for FX-8120, and $230 - $245 for FX-8150.

AMD FX-6100 has only 6 CPU cores, or 3 Bulldozer modules. As such, it has only 6 MB of L2 cache. The processor is clocked at 3.3 GHz, and up to 3.9 GHz when Turbo Core feature is active. Like eight-core CPUs, this model has 8 MB L3 cache. The FX-6100 is listed at $188, and its expected official price is $155 - $170, or close to current official price of Phenom II X6 1055T.

AMD Trinity APU Demo

The follow-on to Bulldozer is called Piledriver and it will make its debut with AMD's Trinity APU in 2012. Trinity is a higher end successor to Llano. It will integrate 2 - 4 Piledriver cores and feature some sort of a Radeon GPU on-die. Performance across the board will be higher than Llano. Piledriver should offer better performance per clock vs. Bulldozer, but Trinity won't be targeted at the same high-end market that AMD's FX series based on Bulldozer will address. Presumably we'll see a Piledriver based FX CPU at some point down the road. AMD indicated that Trinity was a few months away, implying an early 2012 launch. To show the health of Trinity silicon, AMD showed it running Deus Ex in a suite a block away from IDF. The Trinity demo was done in a generic notebook chassis. We weren't allowed to benchmark the APU unfortunately.
