AMD Q4 earnings beat expectations, despite slowing PC sales:kafa:
Citiraj:

AMD reported fourth quarter earnings on Tuesday, beating Wall Street expectations for sales and profit, but guided analysts to a 10% decline in year-over-year sales in the current quarter. AMD reported earnings as many of its rival (1 - 2) chipmakers have stumbled in recent weeks, citing lower consumer demand for finished electronics and gluts of parts needed to make PCs and servers. The chipmaker attributed its beat to strong growth in its embedded and data center businesses, and said that its client revenue, or chips for PCs and laptops, and its gaming segment were down. AMD’s data center segment rose 42% year-over-year to $1.7 billion. Its embedded segment grew 1,868%, AMD said, because of sales from its purchase of Xilinx. But its client group, which includes sales from PC processors, was down 51% year-over-year because of a slumping PC market, AMD said. It added that its customers have too much inventory of its chips, a theme other semiconductor companies have mentioned in recent weeks. The global PC market is in a protracted slowdown, according to estimates.
  • Revenue: $5.6 billion versus $5.5 billion expected
  • Adjusted EPS: $0.69 versus $0.67 expected
  • Data Center: $1.7 billion versus $1.6 billion expected
  • Client: $903 million versus $995 million expected
  • Gaming: $1.6 billion versus $1.5 billion expected
  • Embedded: $1.4 billion versus $1.3 billion expected

Intel, under pressure from shareholders and the market recession (whether you acknowledge that reality or not) have decided to cut pay by 5% or more corporate wide. Corporate employees from every side of the business have confirmed that the company is making drastic cuts, which are affecting its employees’ compensation and benefits. Quarterly pay bonuses, annual bonuses, a halving of 401k match from 5% to 2.5%, suspension of raises, and a cut to base salaries are all official according to internal communication. The cuts are all over, widely affecting engineering departments, with leadership seeing 10% to 15% cuts while CEO Pat Gelsinger sees losses of 25%. These fiscal measures are causing concern among employees who just a couple of years ago must have felt like untouchables living in a gilded age but the cuts just keep cutting deeper with rampant inflation. While the company claims that these cuts are necessary to reduce its burn rate, the fact that the company’s dividend remains intact raises questions about its priorities. This decision to prioritize the dividend over employee retention is not only a cause for concern for employees but also for the long-term future of the company. The loss of bonuses, combined with base pay cuts, may cause a drop in morale.

AMD grabs over 30% CPU market share as Intel continues to decline:kafa:
Citiraj:

AMD has grabbed share away from Intel Corp (INTC.O), which still remains the largest player in the market for what are known as x86 processors, which work with popular operating systems like Microsoft Corp's (MSFT.O) Windows. In the fourth quarter, Intel had 68.7% market share for x86 processors versus AMD's 31.3%, which was up from 28.5% a year earlier, according to Mercury Research. The results came amid what Mercury Research President Dean McCarron said in the report was the worst downturn in the PC chip market since the 1980s and possibly the worst in the industry's history. After snapping up PCs and laptops for working from home during the pandemic, consumers and businesses have slowed their purchases amid rising inflation and economic uncertainty. But the slowdown has played out differently for AMD and Intel. AMD last month beat Wall Street sales expectations while Intel conceded that it has "stumbled" in competing with its longtime rival, with Intel's expected losses forcing broad employee pay cuts.

AMD strikes back: Ryzen 9 7945HX beats Intel Core i9-13980HX despite much lower power consumption:chears:
Citiraj:

Intel's flagship consumed anywhere from 180-190W and even spiked beyond 200W with average temperatures hovering around 85C. Within a few seconds of operation, the CPU was throttling to sub 3.8 GHz clocks. Meanwhile, AMD's chip never broke past 120W which was its peak and temps were close to 80C but the chip remained steady with a 4.3-4.4 GHz clock speed. The results even compared to the previous-gen ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 which packed an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX CPU are superb. The older chip did consume 80W power or 33% lower than the 7945HX but the Dragon Range CPU offers more than twice the performance uplift too.

Since last year AMD-Xilinx has been posting Linux patches for enabling CDX as a new bus between application processors (APUs) and FPGAs. The AMD CDX bus is now poised for introduction in the upcoming Linux 6.4 cycle. With AMD CDX, FPGA devices can be dynamically discovered and controlled by the main application CPU/APU. AMD's been working on this Linux support for CDX as part of their future hardware support and now that code under review for months is finally ready for upstreaming to the mainline Linux kernel. Based on the timing and all things considered, it would seem the AMD CDX bus is used with the forthcoming Ryzen 7040 series chips with the "XDNA AI" engine where there is a dedicated AI engine to be found in AMD's newest laptop chips based on FPGA IP from their Xilinx acquisition.

Zen 5 Secrets Revealed - it's Gonna Be (Really) Good:kafa:
Citiraj:

The AMD Zen 5 core architecture which is internally codenamed "Nirvana" has had work started on it since 2020-2021. The first Zen 5 products are expected to land in 2024 & based on recent reports, it will be built completely from the ground up.The first major change rumored for AMD's Zen 5 CPU core architecture is the use of a new "Ladder" shared cache. The earlier Zen architectures had the L3 cache split into two 16 MB blocks shared by the two CCX's within each CCD. Each CCX could only access 16 MB of L3 cache pools. This structure is said to drastically reduce the inter-core latency and communication bottlenecks compared to the ring interconnect design.

AMD Phoenix Ryzen 7040 APUs benchmarked, higher Performance than Intel at same power, gaming & rfficiency leadership:frend:
Citiraj:

The AMD Ryzen 7040 Phoenix APU lineup utilizes both Zen 4 and RDNA 3 cores. The new Phoenix APUs carry LPDDR5x and PCIe 5 support and come in SKUs ranging from 35W to 45W. The APUs will be outfitted with the latest AMD XDNA AI engines based on Xilinx design known as Ryzen AI. So coming to the tests, a total of four laptops were pitted against each other, all from Lenovo (14"). All designs are 2023 and two featured Intel 13th Gen Core i7-13700H & Core i5-13500H while the other two featured the AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS and Ryzen 7 7735HS CPUs. The AMD laptops were configured with 55W while the Intel laptops were configured at 65W. The Intel laptops were using LPDDR5-5200 memory while the AMD laptops were using LPDDR5x-6400 memory.

First up, we have the synthetic benchmarks in Cinebench R23 where Intel retains a small lead in the single-core benchmarks but AMD ends up faster in multi-threaded benchmarks. Same is the case in 7-Zip where the single-core performance is around 85-95% of the Intel CPUs but multi-core exceeds them. The Ryzen 7735HS sits 21% ahead of the Core i5-13500H and the 7840HS sits around 10% ahead of the Core i7-13700H. In video encoding performance, the AMD VCN 4.0 engine excels with 44% better performance than VCN 3.0 and a 53% increase over nVidia's 7th Gen NVENC in H.264. In H.265, VCN 4.0 leads both VCN 3.0 and NVENC by 30% and 42%, respectively.

Talking about iGPU benchmarks, the AMD Radeon 780M RDNA 3 chip integrated into the Ryzen 7040 Phoenix APUs is anywhere from 70% to 2x faster than Intel's integrated solution with 96 EUs, their fastest integrated chip on the market yet. That's absolutely amazing performance and almost gets close to GTX 1060 desktop-class performance. You can definitely expect over 60 FPS in a majority of AAA games at 1080P using a mix of high and medium settings. There's also the advantage of FSR and RSR support which these new chips can utilize for even higher performance.

The AMD Ryzen 7040 Phoenix APUs absolutely crush the competition here. The Ryzen 7 7840HS and Ryzen 7 7735HS sit ahead of the competition while consuming much lower wattage in multi-threaded workloads. Even the RDNA iGPU is faster than the RTX 3050 6 GB when both are running at the same TDP of 45W which is impressive. In all power metrics, the AMD Phoenix APUs had the absolute lead over Intel's parts. At its maximum 65W TDP, the Intel chip only comes on par with the Ryzen APU. The same is the case with the Ryzen 7 7735HS which delivers the same performance as the Core i5-13500H at the same TDP. As for video playback, the AMD Ryzen CPUs consume close as low as 3.14W power which is much lower than the 5.23W consumed by the Core i5-13500H.

AMD’s Q1 2023 revenue beats expectations but guidance falls short:kafa:
Citiraj:

AMD brought in $5.4 billion in revenue for the first quarter, marking a slight 9% annual growth compared to rivals, with the figure sitting above the high end of analyst guidance. The big ticket item from AMD's earnings report is the firm's Client computing segment. This division deals with the firm's personal computing products, and as was widely expected before today's report, the segment was in for a bloodbath. AMD's Client segment raked in $739 million in revenue during the quarter, marking a 65% drop by becoming the worst performing division for the company. AMD's data center revenue was $1.3 billion in the quarter, remaining flat annually. However, at the same time, an inflationary environment also drove down operating income from the segment, which stood at $148 million during the quarter as opposed to the $427 million in the year ago quarter. While AMD's management expects the CPU market to start recovering in the second half of the year, the company's outlook for Q2 is not that optimistic.

New AMD Instinct MI300 details emerge, debuts in 2 Exaflop El Capitan Supercomputer:kafa:
Citiraj:

24-core Zen 4 CPU, CDNA 3 GPU, and 128GB of HBM3 all in one package, what's not to like? AMD's Instinct MI300 is shaping up to be an incredible chip with CPU and GPU cores and a hefty slab of high-speed memory brought together on the same processor, but details have remained slight. Now we've gathered some new details from an International Super Computing (ISC) 2023 presentation that outlines the coming two-exaflop El Capitan supercomputer that will be powered by the Instinct MI300. We also found other details in a keynote from AMD's CTO Mark Papermaster at ITF World 2023, a conference hosted by research giant imec (you can read our interview with Papermaster here).

The El Capitan supercomputer is poised to be the fastest in the world when it powers on in late 2023, taking the leadership position from the AMD-powered Frontier. AMD's powerful Instinct MI300 will power the machine, and new details include a topology map of a MI300 installation, pictures of AMD's Austin MI300 lab, and a picture of the new blades that will be employed in the El Capitan supercomputer. We'll also cover some of the other new developments around the El Capitan deployment. As a reminder, the Instinct MI300 is a data center APU that blends a total of 13 chiplets, many of them 3D-stacked, to create a single chip package with twenty-four Zen 4 CPU cores fused with a CDNA 3 graphics engine and eight stacks of HBM3 memory totaling 128GB. Overall the chip weighs in with 146 billion transistors, making it the largest chip AMD has pressed into production. The nine compute dies, a mix of 5nm CPUs and GPUs, are 3D-stacked atop four 6nm base dies that are active interposers that handle memory and I/O traffic, among other functions.

With development continuing on a predictable cadence, it's clear that El Capitan is well underway to being operational later this year. The MI300 forges a new path for AMD's high-performance compute offerings, but AMD tells us these halo MI300 chips will be expensive and relatively rare -- these are not a high-volume product, so they won't see wide deployment like the EPYC Genoa data center CPUs. However, the tech will filter down to multiple variants in different form factors. The MI300 was also supposed to compete with Intel's Falcon Shores, a chip that was initially designed to feature a varying number of compute tiles with x86 cores, GPU cores, and memory in numerous possible configurations. Intel recently delayed them to 2025 and redefined the chips to feature a GPU and AI architecture only — they will now not feature CPU cores. In effect, that leaves Intel without a direct competitor for the Instinct MI300.

AMD confirms Ryzen 8000 AM5 processors with Zen 5 CPU and Navi 3.5 Graphics:kafa:
Citiraj:

During a Meet the Experts webcast with retail channel vendors, AMD has confirmed some important aspects of the design of its Ryzen 8000 series processors for desktops, specifically workstations and value server. In brief, these AM5 socketed chips are going to mix both the next-generation Zen 5 CPU architecture with an incremental upgrade to the graphics architecture, dubbed Navi 3.5. AMD Ryzen 8000 series processors for AM5 will debut in 2024, packing Zen 5 CPU cores and Navi 3.5 graphics. With the Ryzen 8000 series of chips now firmly on the horizon, those patient enough to wait out another generation for upgrades / new PC builds have something definitive to wait for.

Importantly, the slide also confirms that AM5 will soldier on into 2026, and at this rate, we could be seeing two further Ryzen desktop generations before the socket gets usurped by a shiny new socket, which may or may not be called AM6.
https://i.postimg.cc/Vd5g7671/xk-AXyifp-Ym1fs5-Hv.jpg
Moreover, these chips will feature up to 16 Zen 5 CPU cores across two CCDs. Also nestling on the SoC will be the Navi 3.5 GPU, which we are guessing will be a die shrink of Navi 3 for improved clocks / efficiency – but largely the same features. The Zen 5 CPUs will come in three flavors (Zen 5 / Zen 5 V-Cache / Zen 5C) and the chip itself is designed from the ground up with a completely brand new microarchitecture that focuses on delivering enhanced performance and efficiency, a re-pipelined front-end, and wide issue along with Integrated AI and machine learning optimization.

Isto ... i jako sam nezadovoljan njima u smislu kvalitet izrade i ergonomije.

Zen 4c "Bergamo": AMD's 16-core CCD requires only 9.6% more area than 8 cores:kafa:
Citiraj:

AMD squeezes 16 cores with the exact same caches into the format that was previously available for 8 cores. The only thing that doesn't grow with it is the L3 cache, which stays at 32 MB in the CCD - it's effectively halved here per core. However, since AMD packs 33 percent more cores onto the processor in the end, the L3 cache only drops from 384 MB with Genoa with 96 cores to 256 MB L3 cache with Bergamo and 128 cores. The fact that the 16 cores and 32 MB L3 cache in Bergamo only occupy 72.7 mm² is extremely surprising, since AMD already specified 66.3 mm² of space for eight cores and 32 MB L3 cache. And this is realized in the same N5 manufacturing, where equal is not the same. Because there are a few refinements that make this possible in the first place. But also a waiver here and there, for example the TSVs, which were always included for a stacked L3 cache in the previous Zen 4 design. That will not happen at Bergamo, but conversely it frees up space.
