The provider of the widely used system optimization tool CCleaner, known as Piriform, has fallen victim to a hacker attack. The company's customers, whose personal data is now on the dark web. After Piriform learned of the MOVEit vulnerability, the company said it acted immediately and initiated measures to protect its systems and investigate the possible effects of the cyber attack. The provider's goal is now to inform affected people about the incident and to protect them from potential misuse of their data. To achieve this, Piriform is offering affected customers free access for six months to a tool called BreachGuard, which helps users monitor data leaks and personal information on the dark web. Access to data protection resources applicable in the user's respective region is also guaranteed. It is now particularly important that those affected protect themselves from possible phishing attacks, in which the leaked data may be misused to obtain further sensitive information.
