A new set of Linux kernel patches posted today work to improve the nested VMX performance for benefiting Intel processors making use of KVM virtualization.

Amazon engineer Fred Griffoul posted a set of five patches aiming to address performance issues around nested VMX (Intel) when handling unmanaged guest memory. In particular, memory passed via the "mem=" parameter or guest_memfd for non-confidential computing virtual machines.

It was found that with the current Intel VMX code there is significant performance overhead due to expensive remapping operations. With nested VMX usage the system is accessing guest pages during L2 VM entry/exit cycles leading to much overhead.

The XFS filesystem is advancing with online checking (xfs_scrub) set to become default in Linux 6.13, enabling metadata repairs without downtime after years of refinement. This boosts reliability for enterprises, complements features like v5 format and inode management, and aligns with growing data demands. Challenges include compatibility and user education.

The latest release candidate for Linux is out, but before its release, Linus Torvalds had something he wanted to get off his chest in his usual style.

"Add the link if it has *ADDITIONAL* information. Dammit, I really hate those pointless links. I love seeing *useful* links, but 99 percent of the links I actually see just point to stupid useless garbage, and it *ONLY* wastes my time. AGAIN."

The Linux Mint team have announced the release of Linux Mint 22.2 "Zara", an Ubuntu-based version which will receive updates through to 2029. The 22.2 release includes several new features, including new full screen options for the Hypnotix IPTV player, a version of the libAdwaita library to support themes, and artwork improvements. One of the big features is a fingerprint manager to providing authentication on computers which have a supported fingerprint reader. "Linux Mint 22.2 features a brand new XApp called Fingwit. This application is dedicated to fingerprint authentication. Fingwit detects if your computer has a fingerprint reader and lets you record your fingerprints. It then configures your system to use fingerprint authentication for: The screensaver, sudo commands, admin apps (pkexec). Note: If like most users you use home directory encryption or a keyring, the login screen still requires you to type a password. If you don't, you can configure Fingwit to also use fingerprint authentication in the login screen." Additional details are available in the project's what's new document. Da. Odradi fsck na particiji manualno kroz Live boot i to je to. Dakle:

1) Live boot
2) fsck.ext4 -y /dev/sda1
3) Reboot

Mesa's Gallium3D video acceleration code has long supported both the VA-API and VDPAU interfaces for video acceleration. VA-API has enjoyed more widespread support among Linux applications and typically more robust while the Video Decode and Presentation API for Unix (VDPAU) was the interface originally started by NVIDIA for their official Linux driver. As of today, Mesa has now removed support for VDPAU acceleration.

AMD engineer David Rosca landed the video acceleration changes to Gallium3D today for removing VDPAU from the Mesa source tree. His reasonings for removing VDPAU are explained in the commit:
"VDPAU only supports X11 and GL interop. There is no Wayland or Vulkan interop support. The API has limitations that makes it impossible to correctly decode certain streams. Application support is also very limited, and VAAPI is always a better choice over VDPAU."
The merge lightens the Mesa codebase by nearly nine thousand lines of code in removing the VDPAU support.

Queued up into DRM-Next is a last batch of Intel Xe kernel graphics driver improvements ahead of the Linux 6.18 merge window that is expected to begin next week. With this last minute Intel Xe driver activity is also a new power management knob for those wanting to run their Intel graphics slightly more efficient.

The new addition in drm-xe-next worth mentioning is the SLPC "slpc_power_profile" sysfs interface. This allows manipulating the Single Loop Power Controller (SLPC) between its base (default) state and a "power_saving" mode.

We've seen Intel work on SLPC power management enhancements in the past and this latest addition for Linux 6.18 lets users adjust the state by reading/writing to the "slpc_power_profile" under the DRM sysfs entries.

Tim Berners-Lee writes in a new article in the Guardian that "Somewhere between my original vision for web 1.0 and the rise of social media as part of web 2.0, we took the wrong path Today, I look at my invention and I am forced to ask: is the web still free today? No, not all of it. We see a handful of large platforms harvesting users' private data to share with commercial brokers or even repressive governments. We see ubiquitous algorithms that are addictive by design and damaging to our teenagers' mental health. Trading personal data for use certainly does not fit with my vision for a free web. On many platforms, we are no longer the customers, but instead have become the product. Our data, even if anonymised, is sold on to actors we never intended it to reach, who can then target us with content and advertising...

We have the technical capability to give that power back to the individual. Solid is an open-source interoperable standard that I and my team developed at MIT more than a decade ago. Apps running on Solid don't implicitly own your data — they have to request it from you and you choose whether to agree, or not. Rather than being in countless separate places on the internet in the hands of whomever it had been resold to, your data is in one place, controlled by you. Sharing your information in a smart way can also liberate it. Why is your smartwatch writing your biological data to one silo in one format? Why is your credit card writing your financial data to a second silo in a different format? Why are your YouTube comments, Reddit posts, Facebook updates and tweets all stored in different places? Why is the default expectation that you aren't supposed to be able to look at any of this stuff? You generate all this data — your actions, your choices, your body, your preferences, your decisions. You should own it. You should be empowered by it...

We're now at a new crossroads, one where we must decide if AI will be used for the betterment or to the detriment of society. How can we learn from the mistakes of the past? First of all, we must ensure policymakers do not end up playing the same decade-long game of catchup they have done over social media. The time to decide the governance model for AI was yesterday, so we must act with urgency. In 2017, I wrote a thought experiment about an AI that works for you. I called it Charlie. Charlie works for you like your doctor or your lawyer, bound by law, regulation and codes of conduct. Why can't the same frameworks be adopted for AI? We have learned from social media that power rests with the monopolies who control and harvest personal data. We can't let the same thing happen with AI.

Berners-Lee also says "we need a Cern-like not-for-profit body driving forward international AI research," arguing that if we muster the political willpower, "we have the chance to restore the web as a tool for collaboration, creativity and compassion across cultural borders.

"We can re-empower individuals, and take the web back. It's not too late."

Berners-Lee has also written a new book titled This is For Everyone.

In early September, a request for comments (RFC) proposed making Rust mandatory in Git, potentially by the time of a future Git 3.0 release. The idea is not to immediately rewrite large sections of the tool but to prepare infrastructure and workflows so developers can confidently build with Rust in place.Patrick Steinhardt, who authored the RFC, put it like this:
As said, the entire goal is for us to have an easy playground that we can experiment on and develop the infrastructure incrementally without yet having to commit to anything.
I'm mostly splitting out the topic of introducing Rust from the larger series that introduce it into xdiff so that we can focus more on the actual process of introducing Rust into Git and less on the potential features that we want to build on top of it.

Earlier this year, we worked with a local computer refurbishing and e-waste recycling organization to part-out computers that were discarded by everyone from end users to corporations. These laptops and desktops can be saved, or in the very least, the valuables (like aluminum and copper) can be removed and smelted down into reusable materials. Parts like CPUs can be repurposed into computers with broken CPUs or used in education, good batteries can be taken from laptops with dead motherboards and installed into laptops with dead batteries, and so forth. Kramden organizes these "Geek-a-Thon" events and Steve attended one nearly 20 years ago, but this time, he got to see how they actually arrange them. This event was super fun! Not everything in here is because of Windows 10 support ending; Kramden does this all the time, for any computer or reason. That's also why you see some Macs in here. Some more background if you're curious: Kramden gets a mix of e-waste and donated / retired machines from local individuals and from companies. Sometimes, these have perfectly good hardware, sometimes they have one or two broken things. They then work with volunteers (like in this episode) to reclaim anything valuable that could be used for education or cobbled-together into a new machine. A good example is the 12700K: This was in there because some company or person got rid of the computer, but obviously that's still a great part. The next step is to identify whatever was broken in the system, save the good parts, and repurpose them (or sell them to fund the classroom program). Anything unusable, such as just broken hardware or obsolete hardware, is broken down into recyclables and trash, sorted, and sent to the right groups to smelt down or dispose of. They are awesome.

Update: malo sam se poigral sa ovim čudom. Nije bedasta alternativa pokretanju virtualke.
